Springbok and Stormers flank Schalk Burger will see a specialist next week and is hopeful that he can start playing rugby again later this year.

Burger has not played rugby since the opening round of the 2012 Super Rugby season when he was heavily tackled by Conrad Smith of the Hurricanes.

Burger has been plagued with injuries since then and even contracted bacterial meningitis which confined him to hospital for a couple of weeks.

Burger says that he has had "one or two" discussions with people outside of South Africa concerning his future but is contracted to Western Province until the end of the 2014 season.

"I don't want to say anything about that really (now) my focus is just getting back to playing rugby and obviously being with Western Province," Burger told Eyewitness News.

"I like Cape Town, so would like to stay there for as long as possible, but we'll see what happens in the future, I'm not too sure yet."

Burger has not set his sights on a particular date when he could start playing rugby again but is optimistic that he could return in some way later this year.

"I don't know too much at the moment actually but next Wednesday, I've got a check-up, various scans and after that we might determine what the next phase of my rehabilitation is.

"Obviously we're hoping for the best, with the best meaning that I can start training, do some more physical activity and hopefully be on the field with the team."

Burger said that he has not been able to exert himself other than doing light exercise.

"(I'm) Just walking and cycling, so basically just gym (at the moment). Obviously I have to walk reasonably far to get any form of sweat happening."

"It's been boring but it's been good. For the last month I've felt like I'm getting stronger, so touch wood. Let's wait for Wednesday."
