Sharks sweat on Carstens’ injury

Sharks coach Dick Muir will be sweating over the hip injury of star prop Deon Carstens, before naming the team to face the Blues in the Super 14 semi-final in Durban on Saturday.

Carstens, who aggravated the injury in the 36-10 win over the Stormers at Newlands last Saturday, first hurt the hip in the encounter with the Lions the previous week.

Muir said on Monday that he would give his prop “as much time as possible” to recover.

The Sharks have players cult hero Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Kees Lensing as back-up, while little know Pat Cilliers is also waiting in the wings.

However, Muir was still holding out hope that the experienced Carstens would be passed fit.

There are no other major injury concerns, although there are the usual “bumps and bruises”.

At the Sharks’ training run on Monday, in which the emphasis was on what forward coach John Plumtree and Muir termed ‘micro skills’, it was notable that a number of Sharks top players were absentees.

Those missing Monday included John Smit, BJ Botha, Percy Montgomery, Butch James, A J Venter and Johann Ackermann.

However, Muir was confident they would all be fit.
