The Sharks have played the Jaguares 19 times in Super Rugby since 2016; the Sharks have won five matches, drawn none and lost once.

It will be the seventh Super Rugby meeting between the Sharks and Jaguares, with the Durban squad picking up five wins from their previous six encounters.

  • The Sharks are undefeated in their last 13 Super Rugby games at home against teams visiting from outside South Africa (W11, D2).
  • The Jaguares have won five of their last 10 away games, including a 22-20 win over the Bulls in Round 8; however, four of those five wins came after trailing at half-time on the day.
  • The Sharks have conceded six clean breaks per game this season, the fewest of any team in the competition.
  • Pablo Matera and Daniel du Preez have each made 11 offloads this Super Rugby campaign, more than any other forwards in the competition.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

In the meantime why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in at Kings Park, Durban. The weather is beautiful, 27 degrees and a swirling wind. Domingo Miotti, the star of the Jaguares win over the Bulls last weekend, starts at flyhalf for the Jaguares.

2.00: Lukhanyo Am is isolated and he concedes a penalty. Miotti boots the ball to the Sharks’ 22, however, the home team win the throw then clear with a poor kick. Lineout to the visitors inside the 22.

3.00: TRY! Wow! Some good handling between the backs and forwards ends with Tomas Lezana popping an inside pass to the supporting Tomas Cubelli to score. 0-5

4.00: CONVERSION! Miotti curls his kick inside the right-hand post. 0-7

6.00: The Sharks are looking lethargic and have been sloppy with their possession; the passing is poor and their ball-carrying non-existent in the opening exchanges.

7.00: The Jaguares have an attacking scrum inside the home team’s 22.

8.00: Big scrum by the Sharks, they win the penalty because Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro collapses the set-piece.

9.00: Curwin Bosch dances through a few tackles and gets past midfield, however, once again the Sharks conceded a penalty at the ruck after some great work by Guido Petti.

11.00: TRY! Hyron Andrews rounds off a wonderful attack after another Bosch line-break. The fullback, who was awesome last weekend, danced through the defence, popped to Luke Stringer in support. Stringer drew the last man and sent Andrews away for the score. 5-7

12.00: CONVERSION! Robert du Preez levels. 7-all

15.00: Miotti knocks on, and the Sharks go wide. They did not use the advantage but will come back for the initial knock-forward. There’s a break in play as Makazole Mapimpi is checked for a leg injury.

16.00: Both packs cancel each other out, so the scrum will be reset. The Jaguares have missed eight tackles in 16 minutes – not great.

17.00: Another handling error by the visitors; they’ve made three to the Sharks’ four. The last scrum took one minute and 40 seconds. This one is reset.

19.00: The Argentinians are running from their 22, but yet again another unforced error, kills the attack. That’s six handling mistakes. The ball is definitely hard to keep hold of because of the humidity.

21.00: Big scrum! Tetaz Chaparro is pinged for standing up in the scrum. Du Preez calls for the tee.

22.00: PENALTY! Du Preez makes no mistake, and the Sharks are in the lead. 10-7

23.00: A favourable bounce gives the hosts a good field position. Matias Moroni was also struggling with the sun in his eyes.

24.00: Emiliano Boffelli saves the day after another Bosch attack; however, they lose the ball in the maul and the Sharks are on the march inside their 22.

26.00: The Sharks are switching play but going nowhere. They went 11 phases while back-peddling a dozen metres or so before Joaquin Tuculet is penalised for a tackle on Mapimpi. The winger looks in some discomfort. Louis Schreuder opts for a kick to the corner.

27.00: Superb work from Marcos Kremer. The flanker swims through the maul and wins the turnover. The Jaguares counter-attack and clear their lines with a deep kick into the opposition’s half.

28.00: Cubelli snaps up the wayward throw by Kerron van Vuuren, somehow the Sharks win back possession. They clear with a long punt, and Tuculet knocks on. It’s another attacking scrum on the visitors’ 22 to the left of the posts.

29.00: The scrum is reset again. The South Americans – who have the worst scrum-winning percentage in Super Rugby – have already lost a scrum and conceded two penalties.

30.00: Referee Nick Briant is getting upset with the front rows; he’s resetting another set-piece.

31.00: Du Preez’s grubber is too long. Moroni gets back to dot-down for a 22 drop-out. That’s a victory for Gonzalo Quesada’s men.

32.00: Miotti kicks deep, Bosch gathers and puts a high-ball which was knocked on again by Tuculet. It’s a real NOTHING play by both teams.

33.00: TRY! Sucker punch! Another attack goes nowhere for the Sharks. Andre Esterhuizen knocks on. Cubelli counter-attacked and popped to Miotti. The flyhalf sent Matera through a hole and the flanker chips Bosch, chases, collects and crashes over. 10-12

34.00: CONVERSION! Miotti adds the extras. 10-14

36.00: a brilliant kick by Boffelli pins the Sharks deep inside their half. Mapimpi is off, not sure why he stayed on for as long as he did because he was ineffective in every aspect.

37.00: Schreuder clears after a good carry by Philip van der Walt.

38.00: TRY! Matias Orlando finishes off a stunning backline move. The Sharks are on the ropes in Durban. Cubelli, Boffelli and Miotti all combined before the centre raced away for his 10th Super Rugby try. 10-19

39.00: CONVERSION! Miotti can’t miss from in front. 10-21

41.00: Miotti’s kick is gathered by Bosch, the fullback goes on another mazy run. The Sharks go wide and have a penalty after Moroni went off his feet. Du Preez kicks to the opposition’s 22.

42.00: OH DEAR! Another wayward lineout is cleaned up by Cubelli. He passes to Orlando to clear.

The halftime score was Sharks 10 Jaguares 21

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Durban. The Sharks have had to make 88 tackles to 35 and only had 32% territory and possession. They cannot hang onto the ball, either. The Jaguares have been clinical when needed.

42.00: The Sharks win an important turnover but Esterhuizen’s kick rolls into touch. Cubelli kicks a 45-metre clearance after the lineout.

43.00: TRY! Matera at the double! The Jaguares win another Sharks’ lineout. They shift the ball wide, break the advantage line with ease. Their close handling skills are superb, allowing Matera space before powering over with two men on his back. 10-26

44.00: CONVERSION! Miotti adds another two. 10-28

45.00: Andrews gives away a penalty after the restart. This is poor by the home team. Lwazi Mvovo leaves the field for an HIA. Miotti kicks to the sharks’ 10-metre line.

47.00: The Jaguares have scored 21 points in 11 minutes either side of the interval.

49.00: A kicking contest ensues as both teams look for territory. The home team have to play catch-up while the South Americans only need to control the pace and tempo.

50.00: The hosts give away a penalty for a late hit by Am. It looks a harsh call by the ref. Miotti will take a shot.

51.00: PENALTY! Miotti slots the angled penalty straight through the middle. 10-31

52.00: Superb work from Agustin Creevy, who has just entered the game. The veteran hooker got his hands on the ball and won the penalty.

53.00: TRY! Moroni cups his ears to the Sharks’ supporters after chasing down his kick and grounding for his team’s fifth try of the afternoon. 10-36

55.00: MISS! Miotti’s conversion attempt is pulled wide. 10-36

56.00: TRY! A good angled run by Aphelele Fassi after some smart hands by Bosch gives the home crowd something to cheer. 15-36

58.00: CONVERSION! Bosch, taking over from Du Preez, adds the extras. 17-36

59.00: MISS! Mitti’s long-range drop-goal attempt almost rolls out into touch. The Sharks counter-attack, but give away a silly penalty because Fez Mbatha was in front of the kicker.

62.00: PENALTY! Miotti is back on target. 17-39

63.00: Miotti’s penalty-clearance is poor, but his side still has possession inside the opposition’s half.

64.00: The Sharks are shipping penalties, but they win one at the scrum. Bosch clears to the Jaguares’ 22.

65.00: Orlando wins the turnover at the breakdown. The Jaguares clear but the Sharks come straight back. Time is running out for the hosts.

66.00: Another turnover allows the visitors to exit their half. The following ruck, they win the put-in to the scrum because of some sloppy forward-play by Robert du Preez Snr’s charges.

67.00: TRY! Orlando has a brace, too. Mvovo over-ran and missed the centre, who danced through and scored. Game well and truly over. 17-44

68.00: CONVERSION! MIOTTI IS ON FIRE! 17-46

72.00: The game is winding down; the Sharks will be calling for the final whistle because this has been abject by the men in black. How do you beat the Lions by 37 points away from home, then produce this dross?

74.00: Amazing last-ditch defence by the Jaguares. The Sharks looked set to score from close range after a two on one. Somehow the home team could not cross the whitewash.

79.00: MISS! The penalty hits the post and rebounds back into play. Both teams turn the ball over in a messy end to proceedings.

80.00: Santiago Carreras tackles Bosch, on the Sharks’ line. The ball is dislodged over the try line, but it looks like Orlando has dotted down.

80.00: TRY! HAT-TRICK for Orlando! It’s the half-century for the visitors. 17-51

81.00: MISS! Juan Cruz Mallia misses from in front, but the Jaguares have a dominant victory in Durban. 17-51
