Lions beat Sharks in Durban

Durban’s Sharks host South Africa’s top team the Lions in this South African derby match. Although the teams have both qualified for next week they have everything to play for.

We are waiting for the kick off.

Garth April of the Sharks kicks off and the match is underway.

2.00: The Sharks knock on giving the Lions a scrum.

3.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum. Elton Jantjies kicks for touch.

5.00: The TMO is called in to review a spear tackle by Andre Esterhuizen on Lionel Mapoe. The TMO says their is now foul play. The game resumes with a penalty for the Lions who kick for touch.

9.00: Penalty to the Lions. The Sharks signal that they will go for posts. April takes the kick and nails it. The Sharks lead.

13.00: Scrum penalty to the Sharks. April kicks for touch.

15.00: the Lions have the ball on attack in the Sharks half. They go through the phases and then chip the ball ahead but the Sharks get back and dot the ball down behind the line.

18.00; The Lions win a penalty in the Sharks half – high tackle. The Lions take the line out option.

19.00: Penalty to the Lions for tackling a player in the air. Lions take the line out.

20.00: The Lions win the line out and drive Malcolm Marx over the line and score. TRY!

21.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick but misses.

26.00: The ball goes from side to side as both sides kick to each other. The spell of play ends when a knock on is ruled.

28.00: The Sharks go through the phases on attack but on the 5th phase the Lions turn the ball over. They kick deep and the Sharks dot the ball down behind the line.

34.00: The Lins have the ball on attack. Elton Jantjies slips an inside pass to Kwagga Smith who is caught. The Lions do however win a penalty. The signal that they will go for posts. Jantjies has taken a knock so he takes his time walking to the kick.

35.00: Jantjies takes the kick and nails it.

36.00: The Lions try to kick across the field but Kobus van Wyk jumps and reaches for the ball, he catches it and runs it to score. TRY!

37.00: Garth April takes the conversion kick and curls it in. Bit of a wobble but it goes in.

40.00: The siren sounds for half time. The Lions keep the ball alive on attack. They go wide and make ground down the wing and then change sides. The Lions keep the ball moving with quick hands and Andries Coetzee scores in the corner. TRY !

41.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick but misses.

The Lions kick off and the second half is underway.

43.00: The Lions get into space on attack but as they look like they are through Harold Vorster is tackled and the Lions lose the edge.

44.00: The Lions win a line out but then Ruan Ackerman knocks the ball on at the back of the line out.

46.00: The Lions win a penalty inside the Sharks 22. Jantjies will have a shot.

47.00: Jantjies takes the kick and nails it.

49.00: The Sharks have gone to the bench. Both props are changed and Curwin Bosch comes on.

53.00: Penalty to the Lions. Jantjies slots the kick and extends the lead.

61.00: The Lions get Lionel Mapoe into space and he looks like he can go all the way but he is just caught. The Lions knock on.

62.00: The Sharks win the scrum and kick the ball well downfield and chase.

Ross Cronje fends off a tackle and steps aside another. The Lions spread the ball from side to side and Jaco Kriel gets the ball out wide and scores. TRY!

64.00: Jantjies misses the conversion.

68.00: The Sharks go on the attack in the Lions half but as they make ground the Lions turn the ball over and begin their counter attack. The Lions go through 7 phases but the attack slows.

74.00 The Lions discipline is slipping as they concede a couple of penalties to the Sharks. The Sharks use the penalties to make ground with line outs.

77.00: The Lions win a line out and run the ball but Kobus van Wyk tackles Andries Coetzee high so the Lions have a penalty. They kick for touch.
