Cape Town Super Rugby franchise the Stormers will be without Scarra Ntubeni for the 2017 Super Rugby season due to injury.

Ntubeni has torn his Achilles tendon and requires surgery which will rule him out for 6-9 months.

Hooker Ntubeni will have surgery this week in a bid to get back to fitness as soon as possible.

The injury leaves Western Province a hooker short for the Currie Cup campaign and they are in negotiations to sign a replacement.

Ntubeni could return for the Stormers by the end of next year’s Super Rugby season but he will need to regain full fitness to be considered for the “business end” of the tournament.

WP coach John Dobson says that they are close to signing Ntubeni’s replacement.

“As regards to hooker, we have got a plan there, but it’s just a little bit of paperwork that needs sorting out. So I don’t want to say anything about that until it’s done,” the coach told IOL.

“It’s somebody who is part of our family, who has played a lot for us very recently. I don’t want to say anything because it still has to be agreed between the parties involved. It’s not somebody random from Mars or Griffons!”
