Stormers beat Brumbies in Cape Town

South Africa’s Stormers host the tournament leading Brumbies in the third match on South African soil in Round 4 at Newlands.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off. Jarrad Butler had to withdraw from the match and was replaced by  Michael Wells. We are hearing reports that Butler could be out for six weeks.

The Stormers kick off and we are underway.

2.00: the Brumbies make a strong start to the match working the ball into the Stormers half. The Stormers turn the ball over and kick it deep. The Stormers chase it up and the ball goes into touch.

3.00: The Brumbies win the line out and kick it deep and relieve some pressure.

5.00: The Stormers win an early penalty. Kurt Coleman will have a shot. He nails it and the Stormers lead.

10.00: The Stormers are forcing the Brumbies to play the game in their half. Its a tough physical battle.

12.00: The first scrum of the match collapses but the Brumbies get the ball out in time. They spread the ball wide and get into the Stormers 22 before being pushed into touch.

15.00: Another penalty to the Stormers. Coleman lines up the kick and nails it.

19.00: The Stormers get the ball on attack and they run it into the Brumbies 22. They pass the ball back and it goes to a Brumbies hand and then out. The Stormers get the put in.

21.00: The Brumbies defend their territory and push the Stormers back into their half.

24.00: Nic Groom goes down injured. He gets some help from the medics which holds up the game.

28.00: The Brumbies win a line out and Tevita Kuridrani slices through the Stormers defence, he sends a long pass out to Henry Speight who scores. TRY!

30.00: Christian Lealiifano takes the conversion kick but misses.

32.00: Penalty to the Stormers. Coleman hits the post. No change to the score.

35.00: The Stormers put the Brumbies under pressure varying their attack in the Brumbies 22. They try the chip kick and it goes straight to Lealiifano. The TMO is called in for some foul play. Penalty to the Stormers for an open handed shove in the face.

37.00: Coleman slots the penalty and extends the lead. Speight comes off for a concussion test.

39.00: Penalty to the Brumbies almost in front. Lealiifano takes the kick but he misses.

40.00: The siren sounds and Cheslin Kolbe kicks for touch. Its half time.

The Brumbies kick off and we are underway for the second half.

44.00: The Brumbies win a penalty from the scrum. Lealiifano will kick for posts. This time he nails it.

48.00: The Brumbies have to scramble to chase a loose ball in their 22 but Toomua gets to it and kicks for touch.

52.00: The Stormers defend a Brumbies attack and then turn the ball over. Coleman kicks for touch and Tomane chases but the ball goes into touch. The Brumbies win the line out and Toomua clears.

55.00: The game is opening up. The Stormers send wave after wave of attack at the Brumbies. Steph du Toit almost scores but the ball is recycled and Siya Kolisi scores. TRY!

57.00: Coleman adds the conversion.

58.00: Brumbies scrum on the Stormers 5m line. They attack and then win a penalty. Moore says they will kick for posts.

60.00: Lealiifano adds the penalty. The Stormers are bringing on a new front row.

63.00; Tension is high and referee Peyper has to come in to calm the players down The TMO is called in to review. Josh Mann-Rea gets a yellow card for punches. No wait. He wants another look. This time it’s red. No cards for retaliation. Stormers opt for a  kick for the penalty.

64.00: Coleman slots the penalty.

71.00: The Brumbies win a scrum and kick behind the Stormers but the ball is carried into touch by the Stormers. The Stormers are however given the put in.

75.00: The Stormers knock on after an attack giving the Brumbies a 5m scrum. The Stormers win the scrum and attack on the 5m line. They go wide to Dillyn Leyds but as he goes over he knocks on. The TMO will confirm. Ok instead the TMO and referee combine to rule that a try has been scored even though the ball was clearly dropped – Peyper says he did not need to have control. Controversial. Lleyds even said he didnt score it.

The conversion is missed.

80.00: The siren sounds. The Stormers have the ball. Schalk Burger kicks across the field and Sikhumbuzo Notshe gets the ball, falls and gets back up and the Stormers keep the ball alive. Vincent Koch goes over to score and the try is awarded. Peyper the retracts and goes to the TMO who says its a try.

81.00: Jean-Luc du Plessis adds the conversion.
