It is a beautiful day in Cape Town where the Stormers will take on the Chiefs this evening at Newlands
Cape Town’s Stormers are unbeaten after playing five matches so far this Super Rugby season but they are up against a team they lost heavily to last year.
The Stormers only played one New Zealand team in 2016 and that was in their Elimination final which the Chiefs won 21-60 in Cape Town.
We are waiting for the kick-off.
Beep! We are underway.
.00: A massive brawl erupts on the touchline but no cards are shown.
.00: Stormers are attacking deep inside the Chiefs’ 22.
.00: TRY Sikhumbuzo Notshe! Guess who? The Stormers send the ball through the hands and at pace. after several phases the Cape side pass to the left and the No 8 dives over in the corner. TMO being consulted but there’s no knock on.
.00: Conversion is good from Robert du Preez. Great start for the home team. It all came from quick ruck ball and quick hands.
.00: A couple of scrum resets. Chiefs on the attack but lose the ball, however, they get the penalty.
.00: YELLOW CARD! Silly from Cobus Wiese is off for an off-the-ball incident.
.00: The Chiefs go close a couple of times but are repelled. However, Jaco Peyper awards them a penalty in front for offside. Aaron Cruden calls for the tee.
.00: PENALTY! Cruden slots the three points.
.00: The chiefs attack again but pass the ball into touch. Stormers have a lineout and start a drive.
.00: TRY Toni Pulu! WOW! That’s one of the tries of the season. The ball changed hands between a dozen players. The move started on the chiefs’ 5-metre line and it finishes with the wing playing a one-two with Liam Messam, all in between the touchline and the 15-metre mark.
It started by James Lowe’s break, he was supported by McKenzie. The fullback was involved in three inter-passing plays with Anton Lienert-Brown, McKenzie, Liam Meesam and Pulu.
.00: Cruden adds the extras.
.00: TRY Siya Kolisi! The Stormers have a scrum and set up 14 phases before the skipper barges over. That was a great play by the home team; nearly every player touched the ball in that move. Superb play.
.00: Du Preez makes no mistake with the conversion.
.00: The Chiefs have won a penalty on the Stormers 10. Damian McKenzie calls for the kicking tee.
.00: PENALTY! McKenzie makes it a one-point game.
.00: The Chiefs almost break the line but Stephen Donald is ankle-tapped. The Chiefs come again…
.00: TRY PULU! It’s a double. The Chiefs ran the Stormers ragged and the winger strolls over for a walk over. It started again from deep inside the Chiefs’ 22. McKenzie punched a hole in the midfield to set up Pulu’s score.
The fullback draws SP Marais and swings a wide pass to his right to the supporting winger. Cruden misses from out wide. Boy, this is some game.
.00: The Stormers have a lineout and they kick across the field. James Lowe collects and starts a counter-attack. The Chief’s ruck was good but the hosts counter and win a penalty.
.00: The home team are deep inside their half after a clearance from McKenzie. Dewaldt Duvenage puts in a box kick but the Stormers are penalised at the breakdown. The chiefs take it quickly. Cheslin Kolbe wins the ball and counter-attacks…it’s end-to-end at Newlands.
.00: Stormers are awarded a penalty for offside; three players and SP Marais will have a shot from distance.
.00: PENALTY SP MARAIS! It’s good from the fullback as he reduces the deficit to a point. Stephen Donald is off for an HIA.
.00: Liam Messam is off for blood. The Stormers are playing into the Chiefs’ hands by kicking deep and letting the Kiwis start counter-attacks. both tries stemmed from those plays.
.00: Kolisi wins an incredible turnover and Duvenage kicks into the chiefs’ 5. What a kick Dyllin Leyds almost got to it but it went into touch.
.00: After some bashing on the line, the Stormers get a scrum before the hooter sounds. Big moment of the match here…
.00: TRY ROBERT DU PREEZ! The Stormers forwards push the Chiefs backwards and are awarded a penalty advantage, however, they don’t need it. Duvenage sends the ball the openside and Du Preez takes it on the run, cuts inside and drives over with two defenders hanging to his coat-tails. Wow!
.00: The flyhalf converts his try and the Stormers take a six-point lead into the break.
The halftime score was Stormers 24 Chiefs 18
We are back underway in Cape Town. Hold on to your hats because we are in for another humdinger.

.00: Liam Messam is back on. Atu Moli is penalised at the scrum and SP Marais will take a shot.
.00: PENALTY SP Marais! The fullback extends the lead to nine points.
.00: The Stormers are penalised for slowing the ball down illegally. It’s inside their 22 so what will the visitors do?
.00: PENALTY Cruden! The first-five-eight makes no mistake from in front. All came from Kolisi’s poor kick giving the chiefs good attacking position.
.00: The Stormers win the restart and are attacking through Kolbe.
.00: The Chiefs have the ball but Kolisi puts in a big hit on Lowe and the Stormers win the ball. They send it wide but Notshe knocks the ball forward under no pressure. No advantage either. Poor from the No 8. Chiefs have good field position.
.00: TRY SP MARAIS! Wow! another try of the season contender. Kolbe intercepted a stray Chiefs pass and kicked forward as he was tackled. Dillyn Leyds chased, gathered and was ankle-tapped. As he fell, the winger made an outrageous no-look, back-door pass to the supporting Marais who runs in untouched to score. Sensational!
.00: Du Preez adds the two points.
.00: The Chiefs are stunned and need to regather their thoughts; they have a lineout deep inside the 22.
.00: TRY JAMES LOWE! The Chiefs send the ball wide from under the posts. Lienert-Brown draws the defenders and puts Lowe away in the corner. This game is not over.
.00: Cruden from out wide, hits the left hand upright and it’s no good.
.00: A wonderful kick in behind the Chiefs backline sees the Stormers set up deep inside the visitors 22.
.00: Duvenage goes close but knocks on with the try-line at his mercy. Bad miss. The Stormers have a new front row.
.00: Line-out Chiefs. Great defence from the Stormers. Knock on Scrum Chiefs on their 5.
.00: Brayden Mitchell is pinged for a tackle around the neck. The hosts will opt for a shot at goal.
.00: Du Preez misses after a little slip in the kicking run-up. Scores stay the same.
.00: The game is closing out. The Chiefs go close but can’t get over; they have a five-metre scrum in a central position.
.00: The Chiefs look to score but Cheslin Kolbe intercepts. The winger is caught by Cruden and the Chiefs survive. They have the ball and attack.
.00: The chiefs win the turnover and attack again. They’re getting close.
.00: After several phases on the Stormers’ line, the hosts turn the ball over at the breakdown and clear. It’s not out and the visitors come back.
.00: Extraordinary passage of play, the ball is turned over multiple times and did not go dead for nearly five minutes. Eventually, the Chiefs kick the ball out. Stormers ball. The hooter goes and Justin Phillips boots the ball into the stands. What a game, one of the best you will see.
