The Stormers started the round leading Super Rugby standings but they face the Lions who have been the best SA Super rugby side over the last two seasons.
The Lions are undefeated in their last two games against the Stormers after having won just one of the previous 12 encounters between these teams.
We are waiting for the kick-off.
BEEP! Jaco Peyper blows and Jantjies gets the game underway
2.00: Lions earn a penalty on halfway.
3.00: Another penalty after the lineout. Warren Whiteley and Jaco Kriel ask for a yellow but Peyper says no!
4.00: TRY Malcolm Marx! The Lions set up a maul and power over, despite the Stormers killing it. The referee says it would have been a penalty try if the visitors had not scored.
5.00: Elton Jantjies can’t add the extras. Great start by the Lions. their driving maul is immense and they’ve hit the ground running in Newlands.
7.00: The Lions win the maul after a choke tackle on Eben Etzebeth. Scrum to the Lions inside their 22.
8.00: Rohan Janse van Rensburg is off with what looks like a bad knee injury. Harold Vorster replaces him at centre. Big scrum from the Lions and Jantjies clears to the halfway.
10.00: SP Marais looks to counter but the ball is lost, however, the home team get the lineout.
11.00: TRY Dillyn Leyds! The winger scores after receiving the pass from Robert du Preez. The flyhalf breaks Madosh Tambwe’s weak tackle and passes to Leyds. The winger chips and regathers his kick and beats Lionel Mapoe to score in the corner. Wow!
12.00: Du Preez adds the touchline conversion and the Stormers lead by two.
15.00: TRY Harold Vorster! The centre runs a great line from Ross Cronje’s pass and ghosts through Eben Etzebeth and Robert du Preez – you could drive a truck through that gap.
16.00: Jantjies puts his team in the lead for the second time.
18.00: Madosh Tambwe runs into touch and the Lions lose their momentum; poor from him. Tambwe then carries the ball over his in-goal area and the Stormers have a 5-metre scrum.
21.00: Jano Vermaak takes a quick tap but he is about 15 metres away from the mark. Du Preez calls for the tee and the kick is in front, about 12 metres out.
22.00: PENALTY! Du Preez!
25.00: Du Preez is taken out “fractionally late” according to Jaco Peyper. Jaco Kriel is lucky, the replay suggests he should be yellow carded.
26.00: Yellow Card Jaco Kriel! Peyper calls over Whiteley and tells him that because it is a head challenge, he has to send Kriel to the bin.
27.00: PENALTY! Du Preez slots the penalty and the Stormers are back in front.
28.00: The game is ferocious; massive hits coming from both teams – a true South African derby.
29.00: The referee is talking to the Stormers’ forwards about holding players back off the ball. Scrum, Lions.
31.00: Referee Jaco Peyper is talking to Siya Kolisi, again. He awards the Lions a penalty for cynical play by Pieter-Steph du Toit.
32.00: The Lions call a three-man lineout; old school move that.
33.00: More poor calls by the hosts and they are penalised, Jantjies will have a shot at goal.
35.00: The ball falls over but Jantjies takes his time and puts the Lions back in front.
36.00: Kriel is back on and the Lions held on while he was off the park. The Stormers have been penalised again. They are losing their composure in Cape Town; not like Robbie Fleck’s team at all.
38.00: The Lions go close. First, through Mapoe, then Kriel, who is held up. Jaco Peyper is going to the TMO. TRY? The angle is not great and therefore, it might not be awarded.
39.00: TRY Jaco Kriel! TMO Shaun Veldsman rules that the grounding is “compelling” and Peyper awards the try. It was not compelling at all but the Lions extend their lead.
39.00: Jantjies makes no mistake with the conversion.
41.00: The hooter sounds and the Lions win another penalty. Jantjies clears to touch but Jaco Peyper calls him back for the penalty to be taken. Peyper tells the players that there is time for the lineout.
42.00: The Lions take the ball into a maul and are held up. BEEP! BEEP!
The halftime score was Stormers 13 Lions 22
Wow! What a derby match! Typical South African bruiser in Cape Town and it’s the visitors who are dominating the game. They’ve scored three tries to one and are winning the breakdown and the collisions.
BEEP! We are back underway in Kaap Stad.
41.00: Oh dear! Ross Cronje passes the ball over the dead ball line and the Stormers have a scrum on their 5.
42.00: The Lions are penalised for collapsing the scrum. The Stormers will opt to re-scrum. Big call.
43.00: Both sets of front rows pop up and the ref calls for a reset.
46.00: The Stormers go 12 phases and then the Lions stop them on the goal line. Scrum to the hosts. Great defence from the Joburg men there.
47.00: The scrum goes down and it’s another reset.
48.00: Peyper calls for both teams to support their body weight. Another reset.
49.00: Vermaak darts close but is stopped short. The Stromer come again and again. Somehow, the Lions win the ball after EW Viljoen’s attempted offload. Jantjies clears.
50.00: Tambwe knocks the ball forward and the Stormers have another scrum inside the Lions’ 22. Maybe they should go to the lineout.
52.00: Penalty to the Stormers after Tambwe is pinged for not rolling away. Du Preez kicks to touch this time.
53.00: The Lions win the turnover but then Kolisi, sees the ball, attempts to pick it up and loses it forward. A scuffle then breaks out. Jaco Peyper calls the captains. Peyper tells both skippers that the next player to start any trouble will be off. Scrum, Lions, who are still inside their 22 – it’s been 13 minutes.
54.00: Wow! The Lions win a scrum penalty after shunting the Stormers off the ball.
56.00: A knock on from SP Marais has given the Lions the ball inside the Stormers half for the first time since the break.
57.00: Sylvian Mahuza knocks on now. Scrum to the Cape side. The Stormers are beating themselves, nothing is coming off since the last 10 minutes of the first half. They need some composure and to cut out the errors.
60.00: the Lions are putting the Stormers under the pump. The move has been going 13 phases. The Lions are making some changes in the forwards. all four props have been changed.
61.00: The Stormers win the ball and have the put-in to the set piece.
63.00: Kolisi’s decision to not take the easy three points earlier in the half, has put his team under pressure as they play catch-up rugby.
65.00: The clock is ticking down and the Lions have repelled everything that the Stormers have thrown at them.
68.00: Penalty to the hosts and this time, Kolisi calls for the poles. SP Marais will take a shot from about 49 metres out.
70.00: PENALTY! SP Marais reduces the deficit to six.
72.00: TRY Sylvian Mahuza! Jaco Kriel sends Mahuza away for the score – a final nail in the coffin.
73.00: Jantjies put his team into bonus-point territory.
76.00: The Lions turn the ball over and will hang on to the win.
