Reports in Japan suggest that former Hurricanes assistant coach Filo Tiatia will be named the new Sunwolves Super Rugby head coach.

The Sunwolves were coached by former Hurricanes head coach Mark Hammet in 2016 but he has taken a position with the Highlanders for 2017.

Forty-five-year-old former All Black Tiatia was Hammett’s assistant with the Sunwolves and has no shortage of experience in Japan having played for Toyota Verblitz between 2002 and 2006.

Two cap All Black Tiatia played for the Ospreys in Wales in 2006 until he retired at the age of 38 but remained with the side as coach.

In 2011 he was promoted to Ospreys head coach for the LV Cup before he moved back to Japan to take up a coaching position.

After one season as Verblitz forwards coach he was promoted to head coach.

Tiatia has also worked for the Japanese Rugby Union by coaching the Brave Blossoms forwards under Eddie Jones.

The Sunwolves,  who announced their coach for the 2016 season late in December 2015,  have yet to comment on the matter.
