NSW rugby coach Ewen McKenzie is backing Wendell Sailor in ridiculing Queensland’s strategy of making the former Reds star the focus of its marketing for the Super 14 opening round clash with the Waratahs.

In a newspaper column, Sailor claimed his former Queensland team mates were unhappy he’d been made the centre of the promotional campaign.

“There are some good young kids coming through at the Reds, yet instead of focusing on a bloke like Drew Mitchell they want to put smart comments about me on billboards,” Sailor wrote.

“I still talk to several of the guys and they are filthy about it.”

McKenzie said he found it “amusing” and “That’s the best they can come up with, using a player that’s left, you’ve got to worry,”

“I think some university students came up with it, so I’m not quite sure what their marketing department is up to, but anyway, it’s incredible what they come up with.

“They want to use him as motivation that’s fine. I prefer Wendell to be focused more on what we’re doing.

“I’ve spoken to him about letting Queensland do what they have to do. If they want to keep his profile up in Queensland, that’s good for him in the long term.”

The situation is about to gather a lot more pace becuase the Reds are about the release a TV ad with the same theme.

The ad will start on Wednesday in the build-up to the Reds’ season-opening clash against NSW at Suncorp Stadium on February 11.

“I wouldn’t defend any of the barbs – I love it,” Miller said. “I think it’s fantastic.

“Wendell’s a big-time player and loves playing on the big stage and if he’s doing the marketing for us and we can build it up to get a sell-out crowd for us I think it’ll be a terrific atmosphere and a terrific game.”
