Wallabies and Waratahs playmaker Bernard Foley is aiming to return to the playing field in Roun Four against Super Rugby champions the Highlanders.

Foley injured his shoulder playing in a Super Rugby warm up match against the Highlanders last week and as a result will miss at least the opening two rounds.

The Waratahs play the Reds in Round 1, the Brumbies in Round 2 and have a bye in the third round so Foley is hoping to return for the fourth round match.

Foley says that he will have a clearer picture on when he can return after undergoing scans.

“I’m not sure the timeline yet, I’ll have to have scans and assess it on Monday and hopefully, best outcome, it’s only a couple of weeks,” Foley told FoxSports.

“I’m not too sure what they’re thinking in that regard [to a return date], but hopefully I’m not out for too long.

“It’s definitely frustrating, just being back for the first week and being amongst the guys and getting a taste of playing footy with this team, the structures they’re playing are exciting, so it’s frustrating.”

Foley said that he was injured in a late tackle and came down badly.

“I was kicking, and I got hit late by one of their players I suppose, and just came down awkwardly,” said Foley.

Foley has only recently returned to the Waratahs after a playing stint in Japan and he joined the Sydney side half way through a 10-day camp in New Zealand.

“It was great for me to get back and meet a couple of new guys and do some work away from the field, build our friendship and our bonds,” he said.

“It was tough, and as a team we had to get each other through it and hopefully that will prove beneficial throughout the season.”
