Crusaders beat Waratahs in Sydney

The final match in Super Rugby Round 6 is on Sunday when the Waratahs host the Crusaders. These teams have met three times in Super Rugby finals with two being won by the Crusaders.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Crusaders – playing in black and grey – kick off and we are underway.

3.12: Both sides enjoy some time with the ball in an extended period of play in which the ball is turned over several times. 3.12 before the first break in play. The ball is eventually kicked upfield and into touch by the Crusaders.

4.00: The Crusaders win the line out on the Waratahs throw but they still manage to win it back. They make some ground before the ball goes into touch.

7.00: The Crusaders get their best attacking opportunity after an error by the Waratahs in their 22. The Crusaders go through four phases about 10 m out but the Waratahs defend well and there is a knock on from the Crusaders.

9.43: the Crusaders create space out wide on the wing after a line out. They move the ball down the line and George Bridge gets the ball and races in to score the first TRY! Ryan Crotty helped to create that with a wide pass but has to come off due to an injury. Manasa Mataele comes on.

10.00: The conversion is missed by Mitchell Hunt.

12.54 : the Crusaders catch the Waratahs napping after a line out and David Havili slices through and races for the line and scores. TRY! That’s two tries from line outs.

13.45: Mitch Hunt slots the conversion.

15.00: Tom Robertson has to leave the field due to injury and is replaced by Paddy Ryan.

17.00: Crotty comes back on for the Crusaders as the Christchurch side kick for touch and set up a line out just outside the Waratahs 22.

18.00: The Waratahs get a boot to the ball and it is sent all the way updfield. Kellaway and Folau chase the ball but the Crusaders get back and secure the ball. The Waratahs get the scrum put in though.

20.00: Penalty to the Waratahs in front. They choose a scrum. 5m out.

22.00: The Waratahs win the scrum and Jake Gordon goes for the line. He is short but Michael Hooper goes again and scores. TRY!

23.00: Reece Robinson adds the conversion.

26.00: Penalty from the scrum to the Waratahs. Mack Mason kicks for touch.

27.00: Another penalty to the Waratahs for not releasing. They take the line out option.

30.00: The Crusaders work the ball upfield but then concede a penalty. The Waratahs go through a couple of phases but then the Crusaders turn the ball over and go through 6 phases.

32.00: The Crusaders lose the ball forward so the Waratahs kick ahead and chase. The Crusaders get back and spread the ball wide where they create the overlap and Tim Bateman scores. TRY!

34.00: Mitchell Hunt adds the conversion.

36.00: The Waratahs get the Crusaders on the backfoot for a short time. The Crusaders slow things down and clear the ball into touch. The Waratahs get an attacking line out in the Crusaders half. Crotty has to leave the field again – rib injury.

38.00: Jake Gordon has a run from the line out but gets caught. The Waratahs keep the ball alive through the phases but it goes dead and they are called back for a penalty. They will have a shot at the posts.

39.00: Reece Robinson slots the penalty.

The siren sounds and the ball is kicked into touch. It’s half time.

The Waratahs kick off and the second half is underway.

42.00:The Crusaders give a fantastic demonstration of running rugby as they make their way through the phases. The move ends with Tim Bateman scoring his second TRY! Waratahs are slipping off tackles though.

43.00: The try is converted by Mitch Hunt.

47.00: Michael Hooper enjoys a break down the wing but has to chip the ball away. It eventually goes into touch.

48.00: The Waratahs win the line out and they slip in inside pass to Jake Gordon who races through the middle and is double tackled as he crosses the line to score. TRY!

49.00: Robinson adds the conversion. Wyatt Crockett has come on to equal the highest number of Super Rugby caps at 175.

51.00: The Waratahs spread the ball wide to Taqele Naiyaravoro who runs down the wing, he bounces three tackles off – especially George Bridge – and goes over to score. TRY!

The conversion is missed by Mason.

55.00: Penalty to the Crusaders. Mitch Hunt takes the shot and hits the post.

58.00: The Crusaders get another penalty just inside the Tahs 22. Hunt takes the shot and this one he nails. Nick Phipps comes on for the Waratahs.

62.00:The Crusaders are trying to move the ball through the hands more. This time they pass the ball back to George Bridge who knocks on.

64.00: Scrum problems start eating up time. The Crusaders win a short arm as the Waratahs collapse. The Crusaders choose another scrum.

68.00: The Waratahs go through 7 phases on attack and then win a penalty for a deliberate knock down. The Waratahs take the line out.

69.00: The Waratahs are coming back. They go through 10 phases and get to the 5m line. They do however knock on and the Crusaders gather the ball and clear it into touch.

71.00: Matt Todd has to come off for a Head injury assessment (HIA).

72.00: The Crusaders attack down the wing, Manasa Mataele slips off three tackles and gets the ball out to Luke Romano, who offloads to Bryn Hall who scores. TRY!

73.00: Hunt takes the conversion kick but misses.

75.00; Hooper concedes a penalty so the Crusaders kick to the corner. They need another try for the bonus point.

76.00: The Crusaders win the line out and drive for the line. They drive over Dean Mumm and go over but the TMO will check. It’s a TRY for Ben Funnell. The crowd are starting to leave.

77.00: The conversion is added by Hunt.

78.00: The Crusaders win a scrum and try to run it from their half.

80.00: the Waratahs go through 8 phases after the siren but they can’t score. The whistle goes and the Crusaders have won.
