Chiefs Super rugby scrum half Brad Weber has said that his team’s 15-30 loss to the Sunwolves was “pretty embarrassing”.

The Sunwolves earned their first ever away win in Super rugby having lost all 23 of their previous away matches.

The victory is not the Sunwolves first over New Zealand opposition as they beat the Blues 48-21 in July 2017 in their home city of Tokyo.

The Chiefs play Super rugby champions the Crusaders next week and Weber said that the under pressure Chiefs could not expect to win if they continue to make the numbers of errors that they committed against the Japanese side.

“You’re not going to win the game if you keep coughing up the ball. I think we coughed it up about 10 or 11 times,” said Weber.

“But you have to take your hat off to the Sunwolves. Their speed of ball and the way they were able to break tackles was pretty special and we have to take a hard look at ourselves because it was pretty embarrassing.”

Sunwolves playmaker Hayden Parker branded the result as “awesome” and warned that it was a confidence booster for the side who will play a travel weary Blues side next weekend.

“It was really nice to score some good tries in the first half,” said Parker.

“The second half was pretty ugly and it felt like the game went on forever but the boys hung in and I’m proud of the way we stuck it out to the end.”

The Sunwolves’ New Zealand-born captain and Japanese international Michael Little said, “It’s pretty amazing.”

“The boys put in a lot of hard work this week and we knew we could do it.”
