Western Province and the Stormers have renewed talks about potentially playing their rugby matches at the new Cape Town Stadium in Green Point.

The Green Point stadium was built for the 2010 Football World cup but has not been used as much as it could have been since then.

Western Province Rugby Union’s chief executive Theuns Roodtman told Die Burger newspaper that they “are in talks with the city” (Cape Town’s City Council) about a possible move from Newlands to the new stadium.

The move was discussed last year but negotiations ended and the move was then described as “impossible”.

While Roodtman was not willing to elaborate further on the potential move Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events & Marketing Grant Pascoe said that Cape Town’s City Council would welcome the move from Newlands to the Cape Town Stadium.

“These are tough and honest discussions. It’s not an easy decision for the WPRU. “

“There are various role players. Newlands is 100 years old and there’s a lot of sentiment.”

Newlands currently seats 45 000 fans and the new Cape Town Stadium has a capacity or 55 000.
