The audit committee of the South African Rugby Union (Saru) said on Sunday that Saru President Oregan Hoskins was correct when he instructed his deputy Mike Stofile not to have discussions with former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer on the latter’s future with South African rugby.

Stofile defied the order in what seemed an obvious jockeying for position before the elections next month, maintaining that he had been given a mandate to do so by the presidents’ council.

However, the audit committee of the president’s council has found that no final decision had been taken regarding discussions with Meyer.

Hoskins was of the opinion that no consensus had been reached about a future position for Meyer, who lost the race to become Springbok coach to Peter de Villiers.

Hoskins admitted at the time the appointment was announced that De Villiers’ appointment was not based on rugby reasons alone.
