Ireland will prepare for the tour in the summer to New Zealand and Australia with a warm up match against the Barbarians at Gloucester’s Kingsholm ground.

The match has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 27 May.

The Baabaas will have a busy week as they will also play Belgium in Brussels three days earlier and England at Twickenham on 1 June making up a three match tour.

The match against Ireland could not be used as Lansdowne Road is still being redeveloped while Thomond Park in Limerick will also be undergoing building work.

“This is a new departure for us, but a very interesting one,” Barbarians president Micky Steele-Bodger told the BBC.

“Ireland were keen to add a fixture in Europe to their own summer tour before travelling on to New Zealand and Australia.

“We are playing at one of the traditional hotbeds of rugby union in the west of England.

“Kingsholm was an obvious choice, and one that we are sure will prove to be a great success for both players and fans.”

This is not the first time that the Barbarians have played Ireland as they have met twice before with the first match taking place in in 1996 and the second in 2000.
