New Zealand coach Graham Henry come up with a big surprise selection in naming Otago’s Nick Evans instead of Dan Carter at fly-half for Sunday’s Test against England at Twickenham.

Henry may be toying with the beleaguered English who have been hit with new injuries all week as Evans is rated only “50-50” to play after he suffered a hamstring injury during training.

Carter is named on the bench but will come into the side if Evans is not fit.

In the forwards captain Richie McCaw, blind-side flanker Reuben Thorne and lock Chris Jack have all been selected while Ma’a Nonu and Aaron Mauger form the centre pairing.

New Zealand: Muliaina; Gear, Nonu, Mauger, Rokocoko; Evans, Kelleher; Woodcock, Mealamu, Hayman; Jack, Robinson; Thorne, McCaw (capt), Masoe.

Replacements: Hore, Afoa, Dermody, So’oialo, Carter, Sivivatu.
