New Zealand coach Graham Henry is backing the idea of ‘sabbaticals’ to top All Blacks and says he will pick departing players if they offer the best chance for the All Blacks to win.

Speaking at the All Blacks 2008 season launch in Auckland Monday, Henry also restated his opposition to picking All Blacks living permanently overseas, reports the NZ Herald.

“As long as we try and keep rugby players in this country, it’s a positive,” Henry said of the NZRU’s proposed sabbatical.

“And also its gives them some time away from NZ to recharge, even though they’re still playing rugby in a different environment. So I think that’s a positive as well.

“If we made available that players from overseas could be picked, huge numbers would go. And I don’t think that’s good for NZ rugby, not good for the fans here, not good for the local competitions.

“We will pick the best team for each test match, that we think is going to win that test match, and we’ll continue with that policy.”
