Ireland could face having to start their tour of New Zealand and Australia without their captain Brian O’Driscoll after he withdrew from the squad before Ireland faced the Barbarians last night.

O’Driscoll returned to Dublin from Gloucester following the death of a close friend and at this stage it is not known whether he will join his team-mates and fly out with them when they leave from Heathrow late this week.

Ireland coach Michael Bradley told The Independent that he did not know when O’ Driscoll would join the squad and said, “No, not at the moment. It is a private matter.”

There is however little doubt that O’Driscoll will miss the tour but he could find himself flying out later than the squad who will fly to  Wellington in New Zealand on Friday night before facing the All Blacks on 7 June and Australia in Melbourne seven days later.
