England boss Martin Johnson has finally landed Brian Smith after more than a month of bartering and haggling between the Rugby Football Union and London Irish who had a signed contract with Smith.

A report in the Daily Mail says that the RFU have finally agreed on a compensation amount for London Irish’s director of Rugby.

Australian Smith will work as England’s attack coach and confirmation of the 41-year-old Australian’s appointment with immediate effect will be forthcoming in the very near future.

Smith will be hired for the same time frame as Johnson has signed and it will take the pair through until the end of the next World Cup in October 2011.

Within London Irish Toby Booth the clubs highly regarded forwards coach, will succeed Smith, with Mike Catt assuming more responsibility as backs coach.

Catt will turn 37 in September and will continue to provide cover for London Irish as fly half cover for Shane Geraghty while the 21-year-old is on England duty.
