Martin Johnson made his first appointment as manager of the England rugby team on Monday, naming London Irish director of rugby Brian Smith as attack coach.

Smith will join defense coach Mike Ford, forwards coach John Wells, kicking coach Jon Callard and scrummaging coach Graham Rowntree in Johnson’s team.

Smith, a former international halfback for both Australia and Ireland, has been instrumental in London Irish’s improvement over recent seasons.

The club finished third in last season’s English Premiership and reached the semifinals of the Heineken Cup, European rugby’s premier club competition.

“Brian is a top attack coach and I’m sure he will be a real asset,” Johnson said.

“His appointment finalizes the coaching team for next season.”
