Wallabies winger Lote Tuqiri says that he will not put his long term health at risk for the sake of his short term hopes by stating that he will miss the Wallabies end-of-year tour to Hong Kong, Europe and the UK if his injured knee fails to fully recover.

Tuqiri who has won Australian caps in Rugby League and Union says that he is desperate to go on the six match tour but only if his knee is fine.

On the upcoming tour the Wallabies will play Tests against New Zealand in Hong Kong then on to Italy, France, England, Wales and finally a match against the Barbarians team featuring George Gregan at Wembley.

Tuqiri had surgery on his knee in September but he is yet to return to full fitness.

“If it’s not right then I won’t be taking any risks.” he told Sportal.

“If there’s any doubt there will be no hesitation (in pulling out).”

“You’ve got to make sure you don’t come back too early. I’ve spoken to a fair few different people about what to do and their experiences and they say not to rush it.”

“I will liaise with medical staff and they will know and I will know within myself if it’s right.”

Tuqiri said that he will step up the training this week in order to test how healed the knee is and confident of avoiding any setbacks.

“It’s going alright but this week will be the test. I’m doing a fair bit more this week,” he explained.

“My gut feeling is I will be alright for the tour. It’s all positive and if it keeps going that way I will be on that plane.”

“But ask me Friday and I will have a better indication for you.”
