Ireland and Munster fly-half Ronan O’Gara has revealed that he has started working on his kicking with the man who helped make Jonny Wilkinson so successful with the boot and this has led to a new kicking technique.

Former England kicking coach Dave Alred has been advising O’Gara which could be very positive for the Lions later this year if O’Gara is named as the Lions first choice number 10.

On the weekend O’Gara enjoyed a 100 per cent kicking record in Munster’s 43-9 victory over the Ospreys which. He also landed the drop goal that secured Ireland’s first Grand Slam in 61 years in the 17-15 victory over Wales.

O’Gara also overtook Wilkinson’s record of the highest points scorer in the history of the Six Nations tournament where his strike rate topped 80 per cent.

He scored 55-points in this year’s Six Nations taking his all-time total to 499 .

When the Lions last toured South Africa the first choice kicker was Neil Jenkins who’s deadly accurate kicking proved decisive for the Lions.

“It’s a little bit of mixing and matching,” O’Gara told the Telegraph of his work with Alred, who has been invited by Munster coach Tony McGahan to hold kicking sessions with the Heineken Cup champions this season.

“Obviously people will say you’ve kicked very well for 10 years but I’m always trying to improve and improve.”

“I’ve just found a new power position essentially in the last few weeks and I’ve tried to work on that.”
