Sharks and Springboks winger JP Pietersen says that he wants to play at full back when the Springboks Test series against the British and Irish Lions kicks off in Durban on June the 20th.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers did not name a Test fullback for the series against the Lions which means that whoever plays at fullback for the series will not be playing in their regular position.

The Springbok management have refused to divulge who they will be playing in the 15 jersey but Pietersen has put his hand up and says that he will be only too happy to take on the task.

The Sharks star says that if selected at fullback he will have no problem playing there, “I made my debut there for the Sharks and the Springboks.” he told News 24.

“My last Test as a fullback was in 2007 against the All Blacks in Christchurch.”

“It is not my decision where I play, but if the coach puts me there, I would love to play the position. I have the confidence to play fullback or wing.”

Pietersen played at fullback in his debut test against the Wallabies back in 2006 but that day the Springboks spent most of the time going forward which softened his debut. He says that since that time he has gained a lot of experience. “I am definitely a more mature player now.”

He adds that his kicking game has especially improved. “It had to get better,” he laughed.

“Remember, I have been working for four years on my kicking and it is definitely better than in the beginning of my career.”

“It will definitely not be a problem for me.”

Pietersen has made his name in the Springbok team playing on the right wing and this is where he has scored the majority of his 10 tries at test level.

He says that he has been surprised at how much the British and Irish Lions used the up-and-under tactic in their first two tour matches.

“I was surprised to see them use that option so often.”

“We will therefore have to stop them on the inside and use short kicks.”

“It will pay off to go and see how other teams played against us when we used the same option.”

A confident Pietersen added that he and his Bok team-mates had taken note of how the visitors have played, especially in the backline.

“The Lions were polished and Jamie Roberts in particular was very impressive.”
