British and Irish Lions assistant coach Warren Gatland said on Thursday that he was very pleased with the progress of the team so far on tour.

Gatland said there could be no complaints after four wins out of four in the pre-Test practice matches.

“I think the team is gelling nicely and the group is starting to work well together. I’ve been pleased with the training and feel we’re making good progress.”

He added that man of the match from Wednesday’s win over the Sharks, scrumhalf Mike Phillips, could get even better. “

Mike did well but perhaps he took on a few things too many. He has a really good physical presence but it’s a balancing act that he has to get right between being physical and getting too involved.”

Gatland added that No 8 Jamie Heaslip had had an immense impact thus far on tour, one of only a select few players who must feel assured of a Test starting berth.

There is no doubt there are still several Test spots up for grabs in this Lions side and with the first Test fast approaching, the two further pre-Test warm-up matches will be of utmost importance.
