Springbok captain John Smit says that South Africa will be taking the test series one game at a time which means that they will be going all out to win the first test which starts on Saturday.

The last time the Lions played in Durban where the first test will take place they won the match and that victory sealed the series.

Smit acknowledged the importance of winning the first test and said that while they will be taking one game at a time winning the first Test will be vital to them winning the series as the remaining two tests are on the highveld.

“We’ve been waiting forever and finally all the hype will become a reality this Saturday.” said Smit

“The series feels more important than most because it’s such a rare thing and because we are facing four nations combined into one,” he told Keo.

“We approach each game to win and in that sense you can’t look at this as a three Test series.”

“It”s a big cliche, but we”re approaching this series one game at a time.”

“It’s true the game in Durban will determine which direction the series takes, but you can”t look to win a series 2-1, that’s a loser’s approach.”

The Springboks will be without their inspirational forward Schalk Burger for the first test but Smit feels they have a good mix of youth and experience will keep the team competitive.

“We have great experience in important areas and some young guys who will certainly show their magic,” the Bok skipper said.

Smit will be playing at Tighthead – as he has been since the end of the 2008  TriNations and will go up against a formidable front row on Saturday possibly including Andrew Sheridan.

“I”ve been playing prop for almost a year now so I don’t know how much time I need to prove myself.”

“It will help to have Beastie (Mtawarira) and Bissie (du Plessis, both Sharks players) next to me, but it really is only one aspect of the game.

“I suppose it also helps that I’ve thrown a few line out balls to Victor and Bakkies in my time.

“That has allowed the management to put another fatboy on the bench (the reserves bench includes two props in Deon Carstens and Gurthro Steenkamp).”
