Lions coach Ian McGeechan has confirmed that Scotsman Euan Murray’s British and Irish Lions tour is over and that he will be flying back home.

Murray picked up an ankle injury in Tuesday’s bruising victory over the Southern Kings and the Lions may have to look at a short-term replacement.

Speaking about the team to play the Springboks announced on Thursday McGeechan added that the Lions did not make their selections based on the team selected by the Boks. It was rather the other way around, he felt.

“The late addition to the Springbok squad intimated that they think they may have to be more competitive in the back row,” said McGeechan.

O’Connell said that it would be very emotional in the change room.

“When we put on the Lions jersey for a Test it is something else that takes place,” he said of the change in approach and seriousness from the tour matches to the Tests.

Flyhalf James Hook is back in training after sustaining a neck and head injury from a high tackle in that match.
