Argentinian international lock Mariano Sambucetti has agreed to extend his stay at Bristol by signing a new two year deal which will keep him at the club until 2009.

Sambu, as he has become affectionately known, joined Bristol from French club Brive for the 2005-6 season.

At that point, he was relatively unknown in England but really caught the eye a few days later playing for Argentina against the British and Ireland Lions in Cardiff when the Pumas stunned the rugby world by deservedly earning a 25-all draw.

He has since had to fight hard for a first team place at Bristol with the likes of Gareth Llewellyn and Roy Winters competing for the second row berths.

However, he has made real progress as a player in his time at Bristol, scoring four tries in fifteen starts, and this it what has prompted head coach Richard HIll to offer him a new contract beating off interest from several other interested clubs.

“I’m very pleased that Mariano has re-signed. We knew that there was a lot of interest from other clubs and we very much wanted to hang onto him,” said Hill.

“I think it’s a sign of where we’re heading as a club that we’ve been able to keep him here at Bristol despite offers from elsewhere.”

“He’s worked very hard since he joined us and has come a long way despite a couple of niggling injuries halting his momentum at times.

“I firmly believe that there is a lot more to come from him and I want to see him realise his potential as a Bristol player.”

Mariano himself is now looking towards the future with the club and knows it’s not going to be an easy ride.

“Bristol are a great club and I am delighted to sign an extension to my contract,” Mariano said.

“It is hard fighting for a place in the first team here but that is good, it always makes me work hard and helps me improve as a player.”

“We have a strong team here and are competing well and I am very much looking forward to playing in Europe next year if we can keep performing at the level we are at now.”
