Former All Black and New Zealand Maori player Shane Howarth has been appointed assistant coach of New Zealand Maori team.

He takes over from Jamie Joseph and Stu Forster, who have stepped down.

New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said 38-year-old Howarth was one of the country’s up-and-coming coaches.

“Shane has made huge strides as a coach. He has a great deal of passion for rugby, particularly Maori rugby and I am sure that he will make an outstanding contribution to the team and the game in general,” Tew said.

Howarth has been Auckland Assistant Coach since 2004 and was also Assistant Coach of the Pacific Islanders team in 2006.

As a player, he represented the All Blacks in 1993 and 1994, New Zealand Maori in 1990, 1992 and 1994, Auckland from 1990 to 1995 and the Blues in 1997.
