Northampton Saints boss Jim Mallinder has backed Ben Foden to be called up by England for the November Internationals in which England will play Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.

England’s regular fullback Delon Armitage has been ruled out of the internationals with a shoulder injury and Mallinder says that the 24-year-old Foden is a good option for England.

“Ben is in a good position,” Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton.

“It’s annoying and frustrating for Armitage.”

“But all Ben can do is keeping playing well for us, and if he does that he’ll have a good chance.”

Foden has also received further backing from former England and Lions star Jeremy Guscott who wrote in his column that he too felt that England should select Foden.

Writing in his column for BBC Online, Guscott said: “I would go with Foden.”

“He’s just been irresistible with his attacking play and there are few players with his ambition to attack, and succeed in doing so, on a regular basis.”

Foden won his first senior England cap against Italy earlier this year and will be hoping for another eye-catching performance when Saints tackle Gloucester in the Premiership at Kingsholm on Saturday.
