Lawrence Dallaglio has questioned England’s refusal to select “battle-hardened” Wasps, Leicester and Bath players for their tour to South Africa.

England head coach Brian Ashton decided to omit all players from the Heineken Cup and Challenge Cup finalists from his squad for the two-Test series against the Springboks.

It was feared picking them for international duty less than a week after they had competed in the European showpieces would be asking too much.

The move has paved the way for an under-strength England to be demolished by opposition they must also face in the pool stages of the World Cup later this year.

Wasps captain Dallaglio, who has not given up hope of reviving his Test career, is unconvinced by Ashton’s policy and insists the players themselves would want to tour.

“The decisions are made by England but to me it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other,” he said.

“Do you pick players who are battle-hardened, ready to fly over and play a game straight away?

“Or do you select players who in some cases won’t have played for three or four weeks? It’s not my choice.

“Players are paid to play rugby and I don’t think anyone would have any arguments of flying over to South Africa and playing a Test for England.”
