Springboks head coach Heyneke Meyer says that he is worried about the amount of rugby his players are playing as they are overplayed and fatigued.

Meyer’s Springboks came close to suffering their first loss of the season but snatched a late31-30victory in Nelspruit over Wales with a penalty try on Saturday.

The Springbok coach said that he was pleased with the players fighting spirit but warns that he is worried about the condition of his top players.

“I almost don’t want to say it, but I’m worried about the state of the players,” said Meyer.

“I’ve never seen the players so fatigued or overplayed at this stage of the year. And I’m not saying this to make excuses,” Meyer added on the Beeld website.

While New Zealand and Australian teams return to Super Rugby this week the Sprinboks have a Test against Scotland in Port Elizabeth on Saturday and the SA players will only resume Super Rugby next week.

Northern Hemisphere based players including Gurthro Steenkamp (prop), Schalk Brits (hooker), Bakkies Botha (lock), Francois Louw (flank), Morne Steyn (flyhalf), Wynand Olivier (centre) and Bryan Habana (wing) have returned to their clubs as they are not eligible to play this week as it falls outside of the international window and Meyer could rest players like Willem Alberts, Duane Vermeulen, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis.

Tendai Mtawarira and Flip Van der Merwe have been ruled out and Meyer has called up Bulls flyhalf Handre Pollard, Cheetahs hooker Adriaan Strauss and Sharks lock Stephan Lewies.
