As the final whistle blew on what was to be a heartbreaking loss for Wales, their captain and most-capped player Gareth Thomas headed to the Wallaby coaching staff and presented assistant coach Scott Johnson with his number 14 jersey.

The Test on Saturday marked Thomas’s breaking of the Welsh record for Test caps – he now has 93.

Thomas attributed the record to Johnson, who spent four years on the Welsh coaching staff.

“Scott is a big part of my international career,” Thomas told The Australian.

“I had gone off the rails a little bit. He came along and put me back on. I have a massive amount of respect for him.

“It was a very special day for me… if it wasn’t for him, I’m pretty damn sure I wouldn’t have been here today. If anyone deserves the jersey, it’s that guy.”
