With Matt Giteau set to return to inside centre and George Gregan to scrum-half, Reds number nine, Sam Cordingley, after missing this year’s Super 14, finds himself in with another shot at staking a claim for a Test starting berth.

Cordingley was called up to the Wallaby squad this week when Matt Giteau was included as one of the early arrivals in South Africa for the Tri-Nations, thus being rested from the Fijian Test on Saturday.

Cordingley, who will thus certainly play off the bench this Saturday for the Wallabies, wants to contend for the number nine jersey.

“Of course … no one wants to sit on the bench. It’s always healthy to be trying to be a contender, if you can, to push for that No.9 position,” he told Rugby-heaven.

Cordingley says the early morning call-up to the Wallaby squad from the Australia ‘A’ camp was a “good wake-up”.

“It’s hard to believe I am back in now, given that it’s only been a month of football after that 10-month break. It’s going to be a pretty exciting week.”

Cordingley still needs constant therapy on his injurious foot, but is confident it can withstand the punishment of a Test.

“It is stable, but it does take a lot of managing, particularly when there is heavy training and after games,” he said.

“The first couple of days after a game I tend to be pretty cautious because it does get quite inflamed. It is going to be like that for the next four or five months.”
