England head coach Brian Ashton will announce his preliminary Rugby World Cup training squad a week on Friday.

The 40-strong party will then gather on June 25 for a 12-day training camp in the Algarve, Portugal, as the countdown to England’s defence of the Webb Ellis trophy begins.

England conceded 113 points and 15 tries during their recent two-Test tour of South Africa, who they will also meet in the World Cup pool stages at the Stade de France on September 14.

But Ashton will now be able to select players from Wasps, Leicester and Bath following the enforced break from international action because of their participation in European finals.

The current deadline for all nations to name their final 30-man World Cup squads is August 14 but this date may yet be pushed back to accommodate those warm-up games being staged later in the month.
