Sale Sharks star Mark Cueto is in buoyant mood as he becomes the latest contestant to don the England full-back jersey this Saturday against Wales.

In a position where coach Brian Ashton seems to have one of his toughest selection dilemmas – this being his fifth alteration in the past six Tests – Cueto is keen to swap wing for number 15 permanently.

“I’ve spoken quite a lot to [Sale coach] Philippe [Saint-Andre] about it and it was a position he saw me maturing into,” he told The Guardian.

“I enjoy the freedom of it. On the wing you do go looking for work but there are times when you get into trouble if you’re not in a certain position.

“At full-back you can see everything happening in front of you and can almost be thinking one step ahead.”

The 27-year-old, who will line up alongside friend and former club-mate Jason Robinson, has also expressed a willingness to sacrifice adding to his impressive try-scoring ratio – 13 in only 18 Tests – in order to warrant his new international berth.

“It’s something me and Jason have joked about,” he explained.

“Over the years at Sale a lot of our moves have been built around him distracting attention away from the likes of me.

“That’s why I scored so many tries.

“Now the tables have been turned and I’m the decoy for him!”
