The world’s greatest rugby players may all be descending on France over the coming weeks but many of them will cross the channel to play at Twickenham on Saturday December 1.

The Barbarians – the world famous invitational side – take on South Africa at the home of England rugby in a special match to be played before the Six Nations kicks off in February.

The Barbarians have already confirmed the first five names who will take to the pitch – several of whom are expected to light up the Rugby World Cup stage in France in September and October.

England wing Jason Robinson, Ireland centre and skipper Brian O’Driscoll, Australia backs Matt Giteau and Chris Latham and New Zealand flanker Jerry Collins are all confirmed as playing for the Barbarians.

The side will be coached by Ireland boss Eddie O’Suillivan.

South Africa are one of the favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Trophy in October and are currently ranked fourth in the world. Their squad will include lock Victor Matfield, wing Bryan Habana, centre Jean de Villiers, flank Schalk Burger, full-back Percy Montgomery and captain John Smit at hooker.

South Africa will play the Barbarians for the first time at Twickenham since 1970. Back then the Barbarians were captained by Gareth Edwards and lost 21-12.
