Ackermann announces Super Rugby touring squad

Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has named a 27-man touring squad for their Super Rugby matches in Japan and New Zealand with Warren Whiteley as captain.

The Lions will kick off their Super Rugby season in Tokyo on Saturday against the SunWolves before flying to New Zealand to face the Chiefs in Hamilton and then the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The Lions will leave for Japan on Tuesday and will be play their opening match in Tokyo wearing a black away kit.

Meanwhile Golden Lions Rugby Union CEO Rudolf Straeuli says that players who missed the cut for Super Rugby will not be released to another union as they will fall in with the Currie Cup side with immediate effect.

“No contracted player will be released to other unions at this stage,” said Straeuli.
