Ackermann full of praise for Lions after beating Chiefs

Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has praised his players for their efforts in the 32-36 victory over the Chiefs but says there is still plenty to work on.

The Lions earned their first ever victory over the Chiefs on New Zealand soil after leading for most of the match including being 11-19 ahead at half time.

“Thankful for the win, and proud of the players and management,” said Ackermann in Hamilton

The team showed good control when we were ahead and behind.

“The players stayed with the game plan and our tight phases were good. ”

“We had a few soft moments on defence and although we won, we still have a lot of aspects to work on in attack and defence that wasn’t good and we almost lost the game through our own doing. ”

Ackermann also paid credit to the Chiefs for the way that they kept the pressure on the Lions to the death.

“Credit to the Chiefs, they just don’t give up, ” said Ackermann.

“We will enjoy the win because it is a good win, but the competition is still long and there is still a lot of rugby left. ”

“We can’t get too excited and every week everything starts all over again.”

The Lions face Super Rugby champions the Highlanders in Dunedin in Round 3.
