The defending First League champions, the Griffons, are looking more and more like serious challengers again this season with the return of some big names for Saturday afternoon’s Currie Cup First Division game against the Bulldogs in Welkom.

The Griffons record try-scorer Cecil Afrika is back from national sevens duty and former captain and strongman Sarel Louw is back in the starting XV after breaking a leg last season.

Also in the Griffons side for the first time is former SA Unde- 21 inside centre Thabang Molefe and former Boland lock Piet Myburgh, while Cheetahs midfielder and Bok Sevens star Philip Snyman will warm the bench for the first time.

Coach Oersond Gorgonzola had to make a few positional switches. With Molefe starting at 12 Werner Griesel moves to 13 and Eddie Fredericks to 11.

Kennedy Tsimba’s halfback partner will again be Cheetahs’ Gerrie Odendaal, who returns to Welkom after playing Intervarsity rugby for Shimlas against Pukke this past weekend.

Louw replaces an injured Kevin Stevens and Myburgh comes in for Isak van der Westhuizen, who warms the Cheetahs bench.
