The axe that cut Tasman from the Air New Zealand Cup has also left a wound at the Crusaders.

The Super 14 champions are wondering how they will be able to continue selecting a strong squad with only Canterbury playing top level provincial rugby in their region.

Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach told Newstalk ZB that they will get in contact with the New Zealand Rugby Union today to discuss the way forward.

He says they need to work out what they can do so the Crusaders are not materially disadvantaged for 2009.

Riach will propose a change in the current structure where frachises would be allowed to contract their own players rather than relying on the unions.
