Argentina beat South Africa in Durban

Out of the last six Rugby Championship matches between South Africa’s Springboks and Argentina’s Pumas there has been one draw and South Africa have won five matches.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

Handre Pollard kicks off and we are underway. 

Both sides show that they want to run the ball. 

2.00: Argentina win a line out and they use a double pass move in the centrefield and  Juan Imhoff slices through the Springbok defence and Marcelo Bosch scores the opening TRY! 

3.00: The try is converted and Argentina lead. 

5.00: Argentina win another line out and this time they chip the ball across the field but it goes into touch. 

6.00: Penalty to South Africa. They will kick for touch. 

7.00: There is a break in play for an injury to Schalk Burger. The game resumes with a scrum to South Africa. 

8.00: Scrum penalty to South Africa as Marcos Ayerza collapsed. Pollard slots the penalty. SA trail by four. 

11.00: Argentina work the ball down into South African territory and Juan Martin Hernandez goes for the drop goal but just misses. 

12.00: South Africa set up a line out which they win and then attack. They are guilty of obstruction and concede a penalty. Hernandez kicks for touch. 

17.00: Penalty against Vincent Koch at the scrum. Hernandez lines up the posts. Hernandez takes the kick but misses. 

20.00: Another penalty to Argentina from the scrum. Koch again. Hernandez lines up the kick but slices it wide and misses. 

22.00: Juan Imhoff slices through the Springbok backline and races for the line and scores under the posts. TRY! 

23.00; Hernandez slots the conversion.

25.00: Penalty (Brussow) to South Africa from the breakdown. They kick for touch and the line out. 

26.00: South Africa win the line out and attack on Argentina’s 22 line. Pollard almost gets through but the Pumas defence stops him and sets up again. 

27.00: Penalty to South Africa. They will kick for posts. 

28.00: Pollard slots the penalty and South Africa trail by 8. 

30.00: Argentina win a scrum in South Africa’s 22. They have the overlap and Juan Imhoff races to the corner and scores his second TRY! 

31.00: Hernandez slots the conversion. Are the Springboks in trouble ? 

34.00: Jean de Villiers makes a dash for the line but is caught. The Boks recycle and continue the attack. They win a penalty. 

35.00: South Africa win the line out and Lood de Jager is driven over the line and scores. TRY! 

36.00: Pollard slots the conversion and South Africa trail by 8 again. 

37.00: Penalty to Argentina for obstruction from the kick off. Hernandez lines up the posts and nails it. 

39.00: South Africa concede another penalty from the scrum. Marcelo Bosch nails the penalty from well out. 

It’s half time. 

The half time score was South Africa 13 Argentina 27

Argentina kick off and the second half is underway. 

42.00: Argentina are awarded a penalty and they take a quick tap and race for the corner. Imhoff slides over and scores. TRY! The Boks were napping while the medics were on. 

43.00: The conversion is good and South Africa have a mountain to climb. 

46.00: The whistle goes as the touchie has his flag up. High tackle on Schalk Burger. They kick for the corner. 

48.00: Argentina defend the line out and the ball goes into touch again. 

49.00: South Africa get the overlap after a high kick. Willie le Roux gets the ball from Kriel and weaves his way through the Pumas defence and goes over to score. TRY! 

50.00: Pollard slots the conversion. 

53.00: South Africa are calming the game down and taking control. They win a penalty and then get another 10 for not retreating 10. They kick for touch. 

54.00: It’s 5m line out but South Africa make a mess of it and Argentina steal the ball and kick deep into touch. 

55.00: South Africa win the line out again and after a recycle Le Roux makes a dash but is pushed into touch.

57.00: Argentina lose the ball backwards at the line out but they play on. Leguizamon kicks deep and Le Roux lets it roll over the dead ball line so that South Africa can take the 22 drop. 

58.00:Penalty for obstruction after the restart to South Africa. They kick for touch and the line out. 

61.00: Penalty from the scrum to Argentina. Trevor Nyakane and Pieter-Steph du Toit come on for the Springboks. Hernandez kicks for touch and finds it in the Bok 22. 

62.00: Argentina go through five phases in the Bok 22. Bosch goes for the drop goal and nails it. Argentina lead by 17. 

63.00: Pollard restarts and the ball goes straight into touch. 

64.00:The Boks try to attack but the Pumas turn the ball over and kick upfield forcing the Boks to attack from deep again. The final pass from Pollard is forward.  Lambie comes on for Pollard and Reinach is also on for South Africa. 

65.00: Tomas Cubelli comes off and Martin Landajo comes off. Marcell Coetzee is helped from the field. Lwazi Mvovo comes on. De Allende moves to flank! 

69.00: South Africa trying to run the ball more but they are becoming more desperate and Argentina can sense the victory. 

72.00: Argentina look happy to defend as the Springboks go on the attack. 

73.00: Penalty to South Africa. They had been allowed to play through 10 phases but were called back after a ball fumble. They kick for touch. 

74.00: Argentina dont contest the line out. South Africa win another penalty. Reinach takes a quick tap and goes for the line. The TMO is called in to check. Reinach didn’t take the tap from the right place so the try is not awarded. NO TRY. We go back for the penalty. 

75.00: South Africa take the line out option. They drive for the line. The maul is stopped and Pablo Matera is yellow carded for a high tackle. South Africa attack down the wing but  Mvovo is bungled into touch. 

76.00: Argentina make a mess of the line out and Reinach gathers the ball and almost scores. A 5m scrum to SA is called. Even though Argentina have 7 men they win the scrum and race away with the ball before being called back for a penalty. 

78.00: South Africa run the ball and Habana scores in the corner. TRY But WAIT! The TMO Ben Skeen wants to check the grounding. Its good. 

79.00: Lambie takes the conversion but misses. 

79.00: Argentina take the restart kick and South Africa run the ball but get pushed into touch. We have time for a line out. 

80.00: South Africa win the line out but Reinach loses it forward.

Thats it. Argentina have beaten South Africa for the first time.
