The Australian Rugby Unions are said to be considering offering the Wallabies captaincy to Matt Giteau, possibly at the next world cup as a sweetener to stop him from accepting almost AUD$10 million to play in France.

ARU boss John O’Neill however says that Giteau will not be able to move as he is under contract with the ARU.

A Gasnier type move would be not possible as the club that is offering Giteau an enormous contract Bayonne would come under fire from the IRB. Gasnier moved from a League club so the IRB could not move on the matter.

Giteau’s only real option would be to ask the ARU for an early release but the ARU will have no interest in releasing their number one playmaker especially since he is thought to be a crucial element of the Wallabies 2011 World cup campaign.

A sabbatical deal like Dan Carter would also not be permitted as the ARU wants all their players to play in Australia which means that Giteau has to play in the Super 14.

He is contracted to play for the Force until the end of the 2009 season but there is doubt over that contract as one of his contract backers went belly up and move to the Brumbies is being spoken about.
