Australia beat South Africa in Brisbane

Out of the last six Rugby Championship matches between Australia’s Wallabies and South Africa’s Springboks the Australians have won two and South Africa four.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

The anthems have been sung and the teams are ready. 

Handre Pollard kicks off and we are underway. 

1.00: Both teams using the boot to test each other in the air. The first error comes from South Africa as Handre Pollard slices the ball into touch. 

2.00; Australia win the first line out and they attack and work the ball up to South Africa’s 22 line. South Africa turn the ball over and then kick upfield. 

3.00: Israel Folau kicks the ball back but South Africa catch it in touch. Line out to South Africa. 

4.00: South Africa win the line out and go through 8 phases. They get the advantage for side entry at the ruck. They are called back and Pollard will go for posts. 

5.00: Pollard hits the post with his kick and the ball goes to Cooper who launches the attack. The Wallabies work the ball into the Springboks 22. South Africa win the line out and then chip upfield. 

6.00: Folau goes high for the ball and then falls and loses the ball. 

7.00: Australia get the ball and attack South Africa in their half. They get the ball into the Boks 22 after 5 phases. The ball slows but the Wallabies keep pressing forward. 

8.00: 8m out Skelton loses the ball/ Francois Louw steals it and Pollard kicks to clear the ball away into safety. 

10.00; Penalty after the line out to Australia for collapsing the maul on the half way line. Giteau kicks for touch. 

12.00: Australia are running the ball at every opportunity. It’s all prertty quick and Genia knocks on so the Springboks have a scrum. 

13.00: South Africa win the scrum and De Allende makes a break down the side. He is caught but South Africa keep the ball alive and work the ball to 1m out. They change sides and Pollard knocks on in front of the posts. 

13.00: Jannie du Plessis comes off after having his neck twisted in a ruck. Australia win the scrum and clear into touch. 

15.00: Penalty to South Africa. Pollard takes the shot and nails this one. 

17.00: Scott Higginbotham gets the ball outwide and chips the ball ahead. It’s too big and the ball rolls out behind the dead ball line. Victor Matfield limps off injured. 

20.00: Schalk Burger wins a penalty for South Africa. Not releasing. Pollard kicks for touch. 

21.00: South African win the line out but then kick to Cooper who kicks it back. South Africa kick the ball back and it goes to Folau who breaks through one tackle and makes ground. He is caught and the ball is recycled but then it goes into touch. 

24.00: The ball goes dead in a ruck and South Africa get the scrum put in. 

25.00: Penalty from the scrum to South Africa for illegal wheeling. Jannie du Plessis is back on and helped that scrum. Pollard takes the penalty kick and nails it. 

28.00: Penalty to Australia as Bismarck du Plessis plays the half back Will Genia at a ruck. Cooper will take a shot at the posts. It’s a long one. He misses. 

29.00: Rob Horne gets the ball and breaks down the wing. He is caught and Australia concede a penalty. South Africa take the line out. They win the line out but then give a penalty for not rolling away. Australia kick for touch. 

32.00: Australia work the ball into the Bok 22. South Africa steal the ball and then Willie du Plessis slices the ball into touch. 

32.00: Australia win the line out and the Wallabies slip the ball quickly down the line and Adam Ashley-Cooper gets through with an inside ball and scores next to the posts TRY! 

33.00: Quade Cooper slots the conversion. Australia lead. 

35.00: The ball is taken into touch after the restart. South Africa put the ball in but Higginbotham steals it. Australia kick deep. 

37.00: South Africa work the ball into Australia’s 22. Pollard kicks high and the ball is knocked back to Eben Etzebeth by Habana and he goes for the corner and scores. TRY! South Africa lead. 

38.00: Pollard takes the conversion kick from the touch line. He just curls it in off the post. 

40.00: The siren sounds for half time. The Springboks play on. 

41.00: South Africa go through 16 phases on attack edging closer to the Wallabies 22. South Africa lose the ball and Australia attack, Cooper tries the pass behind his back but it is intercepted by the Boks. They attack in the corner and Australia hold on. 

42.00: Australia steal the ball and it gets kicked into touch. – Its half time. 

The half time score was Australia 7 South Africa 13

Quade Cooper kicks off and the second half is underway. Will Genia has been replaced due to injury. 

42.00: Penalty to South Africa – won by Bismarck du Plessis. They kick for touch but then after the line out they knock on. 

43.00: Australia win the scrum and run the ball. When they get caught they kick. South Africa counter attack. 

44.00: The Springboks run at the Wallabies and Jesse Kriel runs around three Wallabies who put in weak tackles and he scores. TRY! 

45.00: Pollard slots the conversion. Australia could be in trouble. David Pocock is on. Hooper stays on. Higginbotham off. 

47.00: Australia work the ball into the Bok 22. South Africa turn the ball over and try to kick but it is charged down by Pocock and the Boks have to dot the ball down. Jannie du Plessis comes off again and Malherbe will stay on. 

49.00: South Africa go to the bench. B.Du Plessis, Mtwarira are both off. Heinke vd Merwe and Adriaan Strauss on. South Africa win a penalty from the scrum with their new front row. They kick for touch. 

51.00: South Africa win the line out and use the maul from well in their half. They go to the air and it goes to Folau who launches the counter attack. 

53.00: Australia go through the phases slowly working the ball towards South Africa’s tryline. Penalty to Australia for Ruan Pienaar offside. Cooper will kick for posts. 

54.00: Cooper takes the kick and nails it. Australia trail by 10. 

55.00; Penalty to Australia for not releasing the ball. Australia kick for touch. 

56.00: The Wallabies are playing a lot more direct since Pocock came on. They go through 10 phases on attack edging towards the Bok 22. 

57.00: Drew Mitchell comes on for Rob Horne. 

60.00: Penalty from the scrum to Australia – Adriaan Strauss going to ground. Cooper’s kick is a shocker and goes to the left. Matt Toomua is warming up. 

62.00: Matt Giteau almost gets through with a dummy and slices through, he passes passes to Folau but the ball is missed and it goes to ground. Would have been a try almost certainly. 

64.00:Penalty to South Africa in their half. Pollard kicks for touch. he fails to find it so Australia get the ball and kick the ball out behind where Pollard had kicked it. Cooper comes off and is replaced by Toomua. 

66.00: Australia go on the attack in the Bok 22 again. They go through the phases but they concede a penalty after 9 phases. Australia have the momentum but they keep losing the ball or conceding a penalty when it really counts. 

67.00: Matt Giteau comes off after taking a knock. 

68.00: Australia back on the attack and after six phases they get into the Bok 22. 

69.00: Australia earn another penalty and kick for the corner. 70% possesion for the Wallabies over the last 10 minutes. Marcell Coetzee limps off. 

70.00: Australia win the line out and work the ball to the line but knock forward on the line.  

71.00: South Africa win the line out but Schalk Burger is driven back into the ground by Michael Hooper and he has to ground the ball behind the line. Australian scrum on the 5m line. 

72.00: Penalty from the scrum to Australia. South Africa collapsing. They choose another scrum. 

73.00: Australia win the scrum and Folau goes for the line. He is stopped and then Hooper comes in support and slips through to score. TRY! 

74.00: Quade Cooper (didn’t notice he was back on) adds the conversion. He leaves the field again. 

75.00: Toomua kicks for touch and pushes South Africa back into their half. 

76.00: South Africa win the line out. They use the maul and then kick – the ball goes to Folau and Australia start the counterattack. 

77.00: Penalty to Australia. Matt Giteau will take the shot at posts. 

78.00: Giteau takes the shot but misses. Short. South Africa restart and Australia begin the counter attack all over again.  

79.00: De Allende turns the ball over but Australia win a penalty! Moore says this time they will go for the try and they choose the line out. The siren sounds. The line out will follow. 

80.00: Australia win the line out. Its slow. They move the ball across the field and bash away at the Bok defensive line. 

Tevita Kuridrani goes for the line, he is caught and rolls in the tackle – we go to the TMO to check the grounding. It comes down to this. He has literally JUST brushed the grass with the ball. We wait for the decision. The TRY is awarded ! Australia will win! 

Matt Giteau slots the conversion and Australia have won!
