Australia beat South Africa in Adelaide

on

Australia and South Africa will both be looking to get back to winning ways after chastening defeats to Argentina and New Zealand in Round Two of the 2022 Rugby Championship respectively.

Australia has won their last two Tests against South Africa, both in the Rugby Championship. The last time the Wallabies won more than two successive games against the Springboks, was a five-game stretch from September 2010 to September 2012.

  • South Africa is winless in their last seven Tests against the Wallabies in Australia (D1 L6), with all but one of those games decided by a margin of six points or fewer.
  • The Springboks’ last win against the Wallabies in Australia came in September 2013 in Brisbane (38-12).
  • This will be the third time that Australia has played a Test in Adelaide and the first time since July 2004.
  • The Wallabies have won both of their previous Tests in the South Australian capital (29-14 vs Pacific Islanders in 2004, 142-0 vs Namibia in 2003).
  • South Africa has lost four of their last six Tests in The Rugby Championship, including a 23-35 loss to New Zealand in the second round of the 2022 tournament.
  • The Boks have only lost one of their eight games in the tournament before that six-game span (W6 D1).
  • South Africa has won three of their last four Test matches played outside the Republic, including a 31-29 win over New Zealand in their most recent game in Australia.
  • The Bokke have only won four Tests down under since Tri-Nations/The Rugby Championship started in 1996 (five since readmission in 1992).

Players to watch:

  • Siya Kolisi will move ahead of Jean de Villiers (37 Tests) this weekend to become the second-most capped Springboks captain in Adelaide.
  • Lukhanyo Am made four line breaks against the All Blacks in Round Two at Ellis Park, the most by any Springboks player in a match since Damian Willemse (4) versus Canada in 2019. The last player from any nation to make more in a Rugby Championship/Tri-Nations match was Samu Kerevi against Argentina in 2016.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, have a look at the match preview.

PEEEP! We are underway in Adelaide for the first-ever Test match between these two rivals at this famous old cricket ground.

2.00: TRY! Fraser McReight powers over after a superb sustained attack by the Aussies. Damian Willemse lost the kick-off to give the hosts early momentum for an attacking opportunity inside the Boks’ 22. The Wallabies went through the phases before the flanker scored next to the posts. 5-0

3.00: CONVERSION! Noah Lolesio adds the extras. 7-0

6.00: It’s all Wallabies in the early stages. Dave Rennie’s men have had three attacks of more than seven phases each inside the opening six minutes. South Africa is way off the pace.

7.00: PENALTY! Lolesio cannot miss from in front. 10-0

10.00: Duane Vermeulen and Siya Kolisi manage to steal two turnovers in two minutes to save the Boks’ bacon.

11.00: Joseph Dweba, like at Ellis Park versus the All Blacks, throws skew on his first lineout.

12.00: Dweba is off with a cut on his eye, Malcolm Marx comes on.

14.00: Both teams struggling with their set pieces: Boks lost a lineout and gave away a free kick at the first scrum, while Aussies also lost a lineout.

15.00: MISS! Pollard shanks his penalty attempt well wide of the posts. 10-0

18.00: Two wonderful, free-flowing attacks from the visitors end with Australia winning back possession to clear their lines.

20.00: Four forays into the Wallabies’ 22 ends with either a knock-on, turnover or penalty to kill the Boks’ chances at points.

21.00: Three shaky lineouts by the home team leads to the Boks winning a couple of penalties. Pollard calls for the tee.

22.00: MISS! Pollard shanks a sitter to keep the Boks scoreless. 10-0

24.00: PENALTY! Finally, Pollard gets the Boks on the scoresheet. 10-3

26.00: Another penalty at the ruck goes against the hosts, the tourists kick to the corner.

28.00: Another early drive by the Wallabies sees Mr Williams call over James Slipper for a chat. Boks went to the corner again, but Dweba’s throw was stolen. However, Nic White, under pressure from Eben Etzebeth, dots down inside his in-goal for a Springboks’ scrum.

29.00: Both teams’ set pieces are a mess. Each side has lost two lineouts, while the Wallabies have conceded a scrum penalty and free kick.

30.00: YELLOW CARD! Tom Wright is off for a cynical foul. Wright was miles offside when he tackled Vermeulen after the No 8 took a quick-tap penalty. Boks opted for another scrum. 10-3

32.00: Massive scrum by the hosts’ front row to win a scrum penalty after the opposition angled in. Reece Hodge cleared to his 22.

36.00: Several more penalties set up the Boks on the Aussies’ line. The ref warns Slipper again. Boks go to the corner again.

38.00: Marika Koroibete smashes Makazole Mapimpi in the air to knock the Bok speedster into touch. Mapimpi lost the ball forward in contact to give the Wallabies a 5m scrum on their line.

40.00: YELLOW CARD! Faf de Klerk is ludicrously sent to the sin bin for trying to knock the ball out of Nic White’s hands. The scrumhalf touched White’s face and the Wallaby 9 fell to the ground like Bruno Fernandes. A shoddy call from referee Paul Williams, who is having another shocker. 10-3

41.00: The hooter goes, White chips the ball into touch.

The halftime score was Wallabies 10 Springboks 3

41.00: PEEEP! We are back underway down under.

43.00: Another wayward throw from Folau Fainga’a saw Vermeulen lead a Springboks attack; however, the attack came to nothing.

45.00: A knock-on in the tackle on White kills a scoring opportunity for the Boks.

47.00: TRY! Marika Koroibete’s stop-and-go does Handré Pollard before the winger beats Pieter-Steph du Toit and Makazole Mapimpi to score. 15-3

49.00: MISS! Lolesio’s conversion slides off the post. 15-3

52.00: Fainga’a is pinged for a no-arms tackle, but the Boks botch the ensuing set piece as the Aussies keep the visitors at bay.

54.00: SA cannot help themselves, so many errors.

57.00: TRY! McReight at the double to seal the deal for Australia. Rob Valetini carried into the Bok half to the 10m. White played Slipper, looped the skipper, who then passed inside to Lolesio on the angle. A huge gap opened for the standoff to race down the field before offloading out-the-back-door to the supporting McReight, who dived over under the sticks. 20-3

59.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 22-3

62.00: The Boks look dead on their feet; no juice, no nothing.

65.00: PENALTY! Lolesio increases the pain. 25-3

67.00: It’s all going Australia’s way as Etzebeth is brought back for obstruction.

70.00: An awkward moment sees South Africa begin another attack from deep inside their half.

75.00: TRY! Steven Kitshoff combined with Vincent Koch to send Kwagga Smith away. 25-8

76.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 25-10

80.00: YELLOW CARD! Valetini is off for not rolling away. 25-10

81.00: TRY! Too little, too late, but Kwagga Smith has a brace. 25-15

81.00: CONVERSION! Jaden Hendrikse’s drop kick is the last play of the game. 25-17
