South Africa beat Australia in Sydney

on

Australia is attempting to do the double over South Africa to stay in the hunt for the 2022 Rugby Championship at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Sydney.

Dave Rennie will be looking to keep his home winning-record going against Jacques Nienaber’s stuttering side, who have fallen away since opening the 2022 Rugby Championship by beating New Zealand.

  • es (L5); moreover, the Wallabies have scored exactly 10 points in the first halves of each of the last four games.
  • Australia has won only one of their last 10 Tests in Sydney (D1, L8), a 34-15 victory against Samoa (7 September 2019); although, they have won their last seven matches on the bounce against South Africa in the city.
  • Dave Rennie has named an unchanged team for the first time in three years as Wallabies coach.
  • South Africa has lost their last two Tests, as many as they lost in their previous eight games (W6, L2).
  • The Springboks have led at halftime just twice across their last 10 internationals.
  • The Boks have won one of their last five Tests away from home in The Rugby Championship (L4), a 31-29 victory
against New Zealand (2 October 2021) – the Springboks have scored exactly 17 points in three of those four defeats.

Statistics:

  • No team has enjoyed a greater share of possession (53.5%) or territory (62.3%) than Australia in this year’s Rugby
Championship, while South Africa ranks second for both categories in the competition (52.5% possession and 50.8% territory).
  • Australia scored six tries starting possession from a lineout, more than any other team; however, the Wallabies’ success rate on lineout throws (78%) is the lowest of any team in the campaign.
  • South Africa has the best scrum success rate (90% – 19/22) and has won more scrum penalties (7) than any other team.
  • Len Ikitau has made 11 tackle breaks, the joint-most of any player in the campaign (also Rieko Ioane – 11 for New Zealand).
  • Springboks duo Lukhanyo Am (6) and Makazole Mapimpi (5) have made more line breaks than any other players in The Rugby Championship.

In the meantime, look at the match preview.

PEEEP! We are underway in Sydney.

2.00: Ben O’Keeffe awards the Springboks an early penalty on the halfway line.

3.00: Damian Willemse, starting at flyhalf for the first time, kicks the Boks to the Aussie 22.

5.00: Nothing comes from the attack as Canan Moodie – on debut – drops Willie le Roux’s chip-kick into touch.

7.00: James Slipper gives away a penalty, and Willemse goes to the corner. The Boks choosing not to take the points again.

9.00: TRY! Australia kept giving away penalties, three in a row in eight phases before Damian de Allende takes Eben Etzebeth’s pop-pass to score under the poles. 0-5

10.00: YELLOW CARD! Matt Philip is in the bin for not going back 10 metres and tackling Jaden Hendrikse before the line. Hendrikse would have scored had Philip not made the illegal tackle.  0-5

11.00: CONVERSION! Willemse cannot miss it. 0-7

14.00: Hendrikse again stopped from going quickly with a penalty. Willemse boots outside the Aussies’ 22. De Allende’s grubber is collected by Reece Hodge before Nic White clears to touch.

16.00: Mapimpi is in front of the kicker, which kills South Africa’s attacking momentum. That is poor from the winger.

18.00: Malcolm Marx drops a simple pass from Siya Kolisi. The Boks’ handling is poor yet again. Nienaber needs to sort this out.

19.00: Damian de Allende tries to trap the White’s clearance with his foot a la Ronaldo, but the ball shoots forward before he knocks on trying to pick up the rolling ball.

22.00: Australia makes a handling error to gift the visitors a scrum in the wide areas. Another knock-on, this time by Jed Holloway, allows the Boks another scrum.

24.00: Jesse Kriel cannot handle Canan Moodie’s inside pass. It was clever from Moodie, but his pass was poor as well as Kriel’s hands.

26.00: The game is stop-start, with lots of errors and stoppages for water and injuries. This better not continue because Liverpool kicks off in the Merseyside derby at 12.30 UK time.

28.00: Willemse is pinged for entering the ruck from the side.

31.00: Etzebeth tackles Rob Valetini around the neck to gift Australia a kickable penalty in front of the posts.

32.00: PENALTY! Noah Lolesio puts the hosts on the board. 3-7

34.00: A poor restart leads to the Boks winning a penalty on the halfway line. Willemse misses touch, and Reece Hodge returns the ball to the Boks’ 22. Willemse is having a shocker.

36.00: Etzebeth wins a Wallabies’ throw, and then Boks get a lineout. South Africa needs to get some points because they fade badly in second halves down under. The Wallabies will want to stay in the game until the last 20 minutes.

37.00: Le Roux gives away a needless penalty at the ruck.

39.00: TRY! Canan Moodie – the Springboks’ second youngest debutant (19 years 302 days) in the professional era – outjumps Marika Koroibete to win Jaden Hendrikse’s pin-point box-kick, and races away for his maiden Test try. 3-12

41.00: MISS! Willemse shanks his conversion well wide of the posts. 3-12

The halftime was Wallabies 3 Springboks 12

41.00: PEEEP! We are back underway in Australia.

43.00: TRY! Slick handling by the Boks sees Kolisi keep the ball in play before going out, It was wonderful awareness by the skipper to keep the attack going. The ball was recycled quickly with Marx and Jasper Wiese carrying it into the 22. Wiesse offloaded to De Allende, who played Willemse. The standoff passed to Le Roux, who drew the defender before sending Mostert away. 3-17

44.00: MISS! Willemse’s kick is terrible. 3-17

47.00: It’s all Springboks at the minute as the Wallabies struggled to exit their half of the field.

50.00: All Springboks at the moment.

53.00: Wallabies are under immense pressure as the opposition’s rush defence keeps Rennie’s men pinned inside their 22.

55.00: Some sustained pressure by the hosts ends with Kolisi getting a warning for multiple penalties inside the Boks’ 22.

56.00: Allan Alaalatoa hits De Allende around the head at the ruck, and the penalty is turned over for foul play. That is massive!

59.00: Etzebeth wins the opposition’s lineout to kick-start an attack. Nothing comes from the attack as the two teams kick for territory.

60.00: A quick lineout throw leads to the Boks winning a penalty outside the opposition’s 22. Willemse kicks to the corner after a deliberate knockdown.

62.00: De Allende is carried over the line and held up, but the Boks have another penalty.

66.00: South Africa and Australia are giving away too many penalties in each other’s halves, which is allowing the opposition to clear.

69.00: Superb by Kolisi to earn a penalty for the Boks.

70.00: Darcy Swain wins a throw against the head, but the Wallabies make a handling error to let the Boks off the hook.

72.00: TRY! Makazole Mapimpi gets his revenge on Marika Koroibete by running over the winger to score. Take that! It was payback for last week’s dangerous hit on Mapimpi by Koroibete. 3-22

72.00: YELLOW CARD! A massive scuffle breaks out after the try when Mapimpi pushes Koroibete onto the floor. Etzebeth and Allan Alaalatoa are both lucky to escape cards for hands to each other’s faces. Mapimpi gets a yellow, but it does not matter, Boks have won. 3-22

73.00: CONVERSION! Frans Steyn adds the icing to the cake. 3-24

76.00: This game is done, with just the final score at stake.

79.00: YELLOW CARD! Willie le Roux is off for a deliberate knockdown. 3-24

79.00: TRY! Pete Samu walks over for a late score. 8-24

80.00: MISS! The kick is no good. 8-24
