Big Joe moves to flank for Highlanders clash

Lions coach Eugene Eloff has moved Joe van Niekerk to flank for Friday’s Super 14 match in Dunedin against the winless Highlanders.


Van Niekerk’s move is necessitated by the injury to Lions captain Ernst Joubert, who had a shoulder operation last week.


Willem Alberts comes at in No 8 in place of Van Niekerk, and Cobus Grobbelaar takes over the captaincy.


In the only other change to the team that drew with the Reds at Ellis Park two weeks ago, prop Eugene Maqwelana comes in for Ross Geldenhuys at tighthead.


The Lions team is:


Louis Ludik, Dusty Noble, Jaco Pretorius, Walter Venter, Rayno Benjamin, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Joe van Niekerk, Cobus Grobbelaar (capt.), Gerhard Mostert, Anton van Zyl, Eugene Maqwelana, Willie Wepener, Heinke van der Merwe.


Replacements: Ethienne Reynecke, Ross Geldenhuys, Dewald Senekal, Franco van der Merwe, Chris Jonck, Rudi Vogt, Jannie Boshoff.
