Outgoing Crusaders head coach Todd Blackadder says he believes the Lions are capable of winning the Super Rugby title this year.

Blackadder’s Crusaders were beaten 42-25 in their Ellis Park quarterfinalon Saturday, Blackadder said the major hurdle the side would face would be if they had to travel to Wellington for the final.

That would be dependent on the Hurricanes overcoming the Chiefs in the other semi-final to be played on Saturday. If the Chiefs win they would face a return flight to South Africa for the final.

Blackadder said: “I think they have been playing good rugby all year. We knew when we played them earlier in the season that we would have our hands full today and they’ve improved really well.

“They put us under pressure and took their opportunities so they showed what a good quality side they are.”

Blackadder said he felt sad for the Crusaders on the loss. It had been an enjoyable year and it was always sad when bowing out of a competition.

The Crusaders’ cause in the quarterfinal had not been helped by conceding two early tries.

“We put ourselves under a bit of pressure and to win finals you cannot give away 15 points in the first 10 minutes.

“You are always on the back foot and we had to work really hard to get ourselves back into the game. When we did, we probably forced it a little bit too much and it just shows the attitude and the commitment but we didn’t die wondering – we had a go,” he told ANA.

The try scored by the Lions just before halftime had not helped the side which also suffered badly from missed tackles and the penalty count.
