Former All Black Andrew Blowers is returning home from South Africa because of continuing problems associated with a pre-season concussion.

Blowers, 30, was concussed in a collision with teammate Ben Blair during the Highlanders’ warmup match against the Reds in Oamaru earlier this month.

‘He’s still suffering from the effects of it and we thought it best for him if he returned to New Zealand and made a full recovery,’ Highlanders coach Greg Cooper said today. ‘We can’t compromise on a player’s welfare and health.’

Blowers was drafted into the Highlanders this year after returning from his post-All Black career with Northampton and in Japan.

He was expected to be the Highlanders’ starting No 8, but Craig Newby has filled the position for the opening two matches of the Rebel Sport Super 14.

Blowers’ continuing unavailability and a week’s suspension for Newby means Filipo Levi will start there in this weekend’s match against the Cheetahs. Southland loose forward Hale T-Pole has been called from New Zealand to join the reserves.
