David Nucifora admits that the Blues being on third place on the league table is about the only positive at the moment but he is adamant that the race for the play offs will go down to the wire – and he fancies his team’s draw to help the Blues get there.

The Blues will however have to step it up and they will need to find some of the form they showed in the early rounds.

The Crusaders are way ahead of everyone with 33 points and nine points behind them are the Blues. Three points behind the Sharks.

But just six points separate the next six teams with the Blues, Chiefs and Hurricanes the Kiwi sides in that mix.

“Waking up and looking at the points table was about the only good thing I had to look at,” said Nucifora on RugbyHeaven after the Sydney shambles.

“We are still sitting in third and we are still right in this. It’s still compressed and it looks like it’s going to go right down to the wire like it does every other year.

“There is a lot of football yet and some of the teams still have some pretty tough games ahead of them … teams going to Africa.

The Hurricanes, Chiefs and Waratahs still have to tour South Africa.

“There are going to be a lot of up and down results over the next month.

“We have to get our own back yard sorted out and start playing some positive football and we are obviously still in the race.”

Next up for the Blues is the Brumbies at Eden Park on Saturday, then a bye and then the Crusaders (away), Reds (away), Highlanders (away) and the Hurricanes (home) to complete their round-robin.

On a bad note for the Blues they have lost Joe Rokocoko for the rest of the season but positively the Blues escaped from Sydney with just a few bruises and bumps and it appears Isa Nacewa could return to action soon.

“The reports from the (fitness) sessions he went through late last week were positive,” Nucifora said of Nacewa.

“The medial staff want to have another look at him (on Monday) and then they will make some decisions on whether he is available or not but we are hopeful at this point.”

Nucifora his side needs to take a leaf out of the Chiefs’ book and overcome a confidence crisis of their own to pick up their game over the past three weeks in get back in the mix.

“We have to look at this as a group and say that wasn’t good enough,” Nucifora said of the heavy loss to the Tahs.

“The good thing is we get a chance to get back on the field and do something about it.

“I guess we are a bit like the Chiefs who went through quite a few weeks where they weren’t quite on the mark … they got their confidence back and got up into it.

“We are looking for that game. It has to be Saturday night against the Brumbies.”
